LA CROSSE, Wis. – Saint John's senior
Mitchell Degen (Brainerd, Minn.) finished 11th out of 22 competitors in the javelin on the final day (Saturday, May 23) of the 2026 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships held on the campus of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Degen's first throw (58.97 meters) passed four from the first flight and he put four more behind him with his second toss of 61.22 meters. He threw a 59.16 on his final attempt to miss finals by two spots and 0.49 meters (one foot, seven inches) after the athletes in seventh through ninth recorded personal-bests.
Degen won his second-consecutive MIAC outdoor title in the javelin on May 8 with a personal-best throw of 65.87 meters. Rowan junior Damitrius Hester won the javelin title with a toss of 74.94 on his final attempt. Degen's 65.87 would have ranked sixth in Saturday's finals.
Sophomore
Bailey Evans (Breckenridge, Minn.) withdrew from the decathlon prior to yesterday's (Friday, May 22) final five events due to injury. He was 14th out of 22 competitors following Thursday's five events with a total of 3,445 points, 361 points from the lead and 62 points from 10th.
Junior
Cole Stencel (Mapleton, Minn./Maple River) finished seventh in the 1,500 meters' first heat and 16th overall with a time of 3:52.01 to earn second-team All-American honors on Thursday. Classmate
Cooper Smith (Alvarado, Minn./East Grand Forks) finished 21st in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.54.
