A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (11-13-1, 8-7-1 MIAC) split a pair of 4-2 decisions to Concordia last week.
Concordia 4, at Saint John's 2 (Feb. 20)
Hunter Bjorge snapped home a shot near the right faceoff circle to give Concordia a 1-0 lead 1:52 into the second period. Sophomore
Chris Kernan (Maple Grove, Minn.) tied the game for SJU with his 10th goal of the season – a shot off his own rebound – 1:43 later.
The Cobbers, however, scored a pair of goals 1:30 apart less than three minutes later to gain a 3-1 advantage. Ben Luedtke took advantage of an error by junior goaltender
Jon Howe (Chanhassen, Minn.) for an unassisted tally at the 6:17 mark and Joe Harguindeguy hammered home his own rebounded 1:30 later. Howe came out to play the puck before a hard-charging Luedtke could reach it, but his attempt to clear went to Luedtke's stick, and the CC junior side-stepped the sprawled goaltender for an easy goal.
Troy Dahlheimer extended the lead to 4-1 on a deep shot in the slot with 5:16 remaining in the game and sophomore forward
Logan Lyke (Medina, Minn.) closed the scoring with a shorthanded goal, the Johnnies' second in as many games, 47 seconds later. The tally was Lyke's fifth of the season and 20th career point.
Howe made 36 saves in the loss as CC posted a 40-36 edge in shots. SJU denied the Cobbers' three power-play chances but went 0-for-4 on the man advantage. Junior defenseman
Mason Campbell (Rosemount, Minn.) hit the pipe during the Johnnies' second power play in the first period.
Saint John's 4, at Concordia 2 (Feb. 22)
SJU clinched the No. 4 seed in the five-team MIAC Playoffs with a 4-2 win at Concordia on Saturday (Feb. 22). The Johnnies broke a 2-2 tie with two goals in the third period to earn the victory, the 200th of head coach
Doug Schueller's career.
Campbell's second goal of the game, with 8:54 remaining in regulation, proved to be the game-winning tally. Lyke sealed the victory with an empty-net goal, his sixth tally of the season, with 10 seconds left.
Campbell gave SJU an early 1-0 lead on a shot from the right faceoff circle 5:40 into the game. The Cobbers, however, tied the game on a goal from Tal Halliday off a faceoff win as the horn sounded to end the first period.
Sophomore forward
Cam Boche (Lakeville, Minn.) gave the lead back to the Johnnies with a power-play goal 4:16 into the second period, but CC again answered late in the period on a tally from Blake Johnson with 3:59 left.
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Campbell was named the MIAC Men's Hockey Offensive Player of the Week on Monday (Feb. 24) for his three-point (2g/1a) performance against Concordia. He begins the MIAC Playoffs as the team leader in shots (66) and points among defensemen (4g/6a).
