SJU XC Races Saturday at MIAC Championships in St. Paul

The Johnnie cross country team races at the 2025 MIAC Championships at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Highland 9 G.C. in St. Paul. – Live Results

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's finished 30th out of 36 teams in the elite Gold 8k race of Augustana's Interregional Invitational two weeks ago (Oct. 18) in Rock Island, Ill.

The Gold 8k included 14 top-30 programs. Top-ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse took first with 56 points, followed by No. 2 Wartburg (Iowa) with 68, No. 11 Rensselaer (N.Y.) with 197 and No. 13 Chicago (Ill.) with 211. SJU totaled 809 points in 30th, 13 behind Nebraska Wesleyan in 29th (796). Isaac vanWestrienen of Cornell (Iowa) crossed the finish line first in 23:57.

Junior Cole Stencel (Mapleton, Minn./Maple River) led SJU in 87th out of 339 runners with a time of 25:47.

Senior Eamon Cavanaugh (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) was next in 110th (25:58), followed by senior Jacob Malecha (Lonsdale, Minn./New Prague) in 224th (27:00), junior Vincent Kaluza (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) in 249th (27:10) and junior Lars Molenkamp (Almere, Netherlands/Oostvaarders College) in 264th (27:20).

Open Race
Sophomore Adam Marable (Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) led the Johnnies in the afternoon's Open 8k in 54th out of 159 runners with a time of 28:36. Junior Jack Montgomery (Long Lake, Minn./Orono) was not far behind in 57th (28:38) and junior Colin Kaster (Eden Prairie, Minn./Holy Angels) was 70th (28:59).

SJU'S MIAC CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY: The Johnnies have finished among the MIAC's top two squads in 26 of the past 45 seasons, including nine MIAC titles (1981, 1982, 1983, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2006 and 2007). SJU has 21 top-five finishes in the last 24 conference meets. Individually, the last Johnnie to win the MIAC title was Chris Erichsen '08 - a 2023 inductee into the J-Club Hall of Honor - in 2007 at the Como Park G.C. in St. Paul.

LAST YEAR'S MEET: SJU finished second out of 11 teams at last year's MIAC Championships held Nov. 2 (2024) at St. Olaf. The host Oles, ranked then-No. 9 nationally, won their third-consecutive conference title with 23 points. SJU claimed second with 96 points, followed by Macalester (104), Carleton (106) and Bethel (155).

Kaluza led the Johnnies in 14th place (25:40) out of 172 runners to earn All-MIAC honors (top 15).

Two other Johnnies, Cavanaugh and Stencel, recorded top-20 times in 17th (25:45) and 19th (25:54), respectively. Senior Aiden Chalmers (Chaska, Minn./Minnetonka) was six seconds behind Stencel in 23rd (26:00) and classmate Nick St. Peter (Maple Grove, Minn.) rounded out the Johnnies' five in 30th (26:13).
