Final Results
MAPLE PLAIN, Minn. – No. 12 Saint John's golf's second team, SJU Blue, finished third out of 15 teams – two shots from the lead – at the Minnesota Golf Classic on Sunday, Sept. 8, at Pioneer Creek G.C. (par 72).
The tournament's host, No. 15 Bethel, took first place with a three-round total of 887 (+23), followed by No. 22 Wisconsin-Eau Claire in second by one shot at 888 (+24). SJU Blue scored the best final round – a 294 (+6) – to claim third at 889 (+25) and SJU's varsity was fourth (+37, 901).
Junior
Tim Fultz (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) carded a three-round total of 217 (+1) to tie for seventh out of 109 golfers, second among NCAA Division III participants (one shot behind Bethel's Jack Wellen). He ended the tourney with five birdies and a 71 (-1) in the day's second and final round. Freshman
Drew Krekelberg (Rogers, Minn.) was next for SJU Blue in a tie for 15th with a 219 (+3). He registered an even-par 72 in the day's first round (the tournament's second round).
Senior
Andrew Boemer (Eagan, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) and junior
Ethan Kress (Woodbury, Minn.) led the Johnnies' varsity in a tie for 21st at 221 (+5). Kress scored an even-par 72 in the day's first round, while Boemer posted a pair of 74 (+2) Sunday.
The Johnnies' varsity started Sunday in 11th place, 15 shots from the lead, and moved up to sixth (nine shots back) after the day's first 18 holes.
The Johnnies return home to host their annual Fall Invitational next weekend (Sept. 14-15). Saturday's round is scheduled for tee times starting at 1 p.m. at St. Cloud C.C., followed by a 10 a.m. shotgun Sunday at Blackberry Ridge G.C. in Sartell.
