Johnnies in Second, One Shot Back, After Season's First Round

HAM LAKE, Minn. – No. 12 Saint John's golf is tied for second out of 14 teams, one shot from the lead, following the first round of the Augsburg Invitational held Saturday, Aug. 31, at Majestic Oaks G.C. (par 72).

Gustavus Adolphus is atop the leaderboard with a 301 (+13), followed by the tie between SJU and Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a 302 (+14). Gustavus' second team is fourth at 310 (+22) and SJU Blue is fifth with a 312 (+24).

Sunday's final round is scheduled for an 8 a.m. shotgun start in Ham Lake.

Freshman Gavin Grahek (Maple Grove, Minn.) led SJU's varsity with a 2-over par 74 in his collegiate debut and is tied for sixth. Senior Andrew Boemer (Eagan, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) and junior Gus Briguet (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) followed with a 75 (+3) and 76 (+4), respectively, while senior Will Gruidl (Edina, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) posted a 77 (+5). Sophomore Nate Appelhof (Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace) rounded out the Johnnies' five with a 78 (+6), the opening round's best drop score.

Junior Ethan Kress (Woodbury, Minn.) led the 10 Johnnies in the tournament with a 1-over par 73 to sit in fifth place out of 84 golfers for SJU Blue. Senior Cole Proctor (Brainerd, Minn.) matched Gruidl's 78 (+6).
