Johnnie Golf Finishes 12th at NCAA Championship

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – No. 11 Saint John's golf finished 12th out of 43 teams at the NCAA Division III Championship on Friday, May 17, at Boulder Creek G.C. (par 72).

The finish was the 17th in the top 15 at nationals for the Johnnies, who made their seventh-consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship and 21st in the last 24 seasons (since 2000) this week.

SJU posted an even-par 288 thanks to birdies from senior Sam Berger (Waconia, Minn.) and junior Andrew Boemer (Eagan, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) on the final hole (No. 9) for a four-round total of 1,162 (+10).

No. 1 Methodist (N.C.) edged No. 3 Carnegie Mellon, last year's national champion, by one shot (-21/1,131 to -20/1,130) thanks to the day's best round – a 7-under par 281 – and a birdie on the final hole for the title. No. 13 Bethel finished 16th with a 1,172 (+20).

SJU finished fourth in the tournament on the par-4 holes (+24), tied for fifth with 66 birdies and took ninth on the par-5's (-14), but tied for last on the par-3's (+27).

Berger and classmate Blake Schuler (Waconia, Minn.) led SJU with a 1-under par 71 each during the final round. Berger collected four birdies Friday to tie for 24th overall with an even-par 288, which ties him for the third-best finish at nationals in program history. He tied for 13th in the tourney with a team-best 16 birdies.

Schuler totaled three birdies and nine pars on his first 12 holes and finished in a tie for 65th with a 296 (+8).

Senior Nate Loxtercamp (Richmond, Minn./Melrose Area) matched Berger's four birdies and went -3 on his final eight holes for an even-par 72. He tied for 77th with a 300 (+12) and tied the Johnnies' single-season scoring record of 72.8 set by Joe Schoolmeesters '09 in 2007-08.

Boemer went -1 on his last 11 holes to tally a 74 (+2) and tied for 37th overall with a 290 (+2), the sixth-best NCAA finish in program history.

Senior Mark Longhenry (Bloomington, Minn./Holy Angels) was the Johnnies' fifth score Friday with an 83 (+11) and tied for 82nd with a 303 (+15).
