Four SJU Basketball Student-Athletes Earn Academic All-District Honors

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Four Saint John's University student-athletes were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District men's basketball team on Tuesday, March 26.

Junior guard Luke Healy (Hudson, Wis.), sophomore guard Kyle Johnson (Prior Lake, Minn./DeLaSalle), senior wing Ryan Thissen (Rosemount, Minn./Eastview) and junior guard Kooper Vaughn (St. Charles, Minn.) earned the academic honor.

Nominees must be a sophomore or better with a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher. Each institution may nominate up to four student-athletes for Academic All-District recognition in basketball.

All of the Academic All-District awardees are now eligible for Academic All-America distinction, which will be voted on by organization members and announced on Wednesday, April 17.

The CSC Academic All-District distinction is the second-consecutive for Thissen and Vaughn.

A biochemistry major (pre-medicine emphasis) with a 3.99 GPA, Thissen was named to the CSC Academic All-America first team and D3hoops.com All-Region 9 third team last season. He earned his second-straight All-MIAC honor in 2023-24 after he led the Johnnies in assists (53) and minutes played (26.3 mpg.) and was second in scoring (13.7 ppg.). Thissen became the 40th Johnnie in school history to eclipse 1,000 career points Dec. 6 at Concordia-Moorhead and finished this season with 1,255, which is good for 15th on the all-time list.

Vaughn is a global business leadership major with a 3.77 GPA. He earned All-MIAC honors, led NCAA Division III in three-point percentage (.490/76-155) and was ninth in free-throw percentage (.909/80-88) in 2023-24. Vaughn started all 26 games and led SJU in scoring (13.8 ppg.), three-pointers (76), three-point percentage and free-throw percentage. He tied the Johnnies' individual record for made three-pointers with 11 (11-for-16) Feb. 3 vs. St. Scholastica and finished with 38 points, which were the most by a Johnnie in a single game since 1989, in just 24:30 played.

Healy is an accounting major with a 4.0 GPA and played 25 of 26 games in 2023-24. He averaged 4.8 points and shot 56.2 percent (41-for-73) from the field in 14.8 minutes per game. Healy totaled 45 assists and 14 steals. He is a 47.3-percent shooter (53-for-112) overall and is 84.3 percent (43-51) from the free-throw line in two seasons with the Johnnies.

A psychology major with a 3.84 GPA, Johnson also played 25 games this season and averaged 7.3 points with a .375 three-point percentage (36-for-96) in 15.8 minutes per contest. He finished second on the team in made three-pointers (36) and totaled 23 assists and 11 steals.

The Johnnies (20-6, 18-2 MIAC) won their 11th MIAC regular-season title in program history and fourth in the last six seasons (no MIAC season in 2020-21) in 2023-24. The 20-win season was also the Johnnies' 15th overall and fifth in the past eight seasons. Four of the Johnnies' six losses were decided by three points or less. SJU finished as the Division III leader in shooting percentage (.516) and three-point percentage (.409), and fourth in free-throw percentage (.804).
