MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Saint John's sophomore
Brayden Slavik (Green Isle, Minn./Chaska, Minn.) broke the program record in the 500-yard freestyle at the second day of the 2024 MIAC Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday, Feb. 15, at the University of Minnesota's Jean Freeman Aquatic Center.
Slavik broke the previous SJU record of 4:33.17 (set by Josh Seaburg '12 in 2012) with a time of 4:32.97 to finish second for his first All-MIAC (top three) honor. Slavik recorded the top prelim time (4:35.92) Thursday morning and fell two seconds shy of Gustavus Adolphus' Matt Strom (4:30.58) for the title.
Gustavus leads the six-team field with 332 points, followed by SJU (202), Carleton (182) and St. Olaf (172).
Junior
Connor Thayer (Prior Lake, Minn.) followed Slavik in seventh place (4:48.08) and senior
Parker Scanlon (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) was 12th (4:51.54). The last time three Johnnies scored points in the 500 Free was 2012.
Junior
Liam Noble (Plymouth, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) touched the wall second (20.94), 0.15 behind the Gusties' Kieran Ripken, in the 50-yard freestyle. The All-MIAC distinction is Noble's 12th overall and fifth as an individual. Junior
Carter Larson (Sartell, Minn./Sartell-St. Stephen) just missed All-MIAC honors himself in fourth (21.10), 0.09 from third, and sophomore
Carsten Reuter (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) followed in fifth (21.27). Junior
Zach Ruoff (Melrose, Minn./Melrose Area) was the fourth Johnnie to score in the event in 13th (21.98).
Three Johnnies raced in the 200-yard individual medley's B final Thursday night. Junior
Colby Kern (Delano, Minn.) missed the A final by 0:00.03 of a second this morning (1:57.98) and placed 11th (1:58.27) in the evening's final. Freshman
Simon Nyangamoi (Harrisburg, S.D.) and sophomore
Andrew Roggeman (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) claimed 14th (2:01.22) and 16th (2:05.14), respectively.
The Johnnies' 400-yard medley relay (Noble,
Clay Megaw, Kern, Reuter) finished fifth (3:29.53).
The third day of competition begins with prelims at 10:30 a.m. Friday, followed by finals at 6:30 p.m., in Minneapolis.
