Hermanson’s Late Goal Gives SJU a 2-2 Draw at Augsburg

Box Score

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Junior forward Carter Hermanson's (St. Paul, Minn./Holy Angels) first goal of the season with 23.8 seconds remaining gave Saint John's a 2-2 draw at Augsburg on Wednesday night, Oct. 2, at Edor Nelson Field.

Charging up the right side, sophomore defender McKaid Schotzko (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) centered the ball from 30 yards out and found Hermanson at the top of the box. Hermanson stuck out his right leg to stop the ball in the air, spun to his left and chipped the ball with his left foot to the back of the net for the game-tying tally and fourth collegiate goal.

Tomas Menna gave Augsburg (8-2-2, 2-0-1 MIAC), which was listed seventh in the latest United Soccer Coaches Region IX rankings released yesterday (Oct. 1), a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute. Mizael Harris opened the game's scoring for the home team in the 27th minute.

Junior forward Alex Bowman (Elk River, Minn./Rogers) tied the game at 1-1 for SJU (3-4-1, 1-2-1 MIAC) with his third goal of the season on a direct header off a corner kick from freshman defender Brendan Hainey (Minneapolis, Minn./Holy Angels) with 2:49 left in the first half. The goal was the 12th in 34 career games for Bowman, who missed the previous three matches due to injury and leads the team with eight points (3g/2a) this fall.

Senior goalkeeper Evan Siefken (Lakeville, Minn./North) made four saves in the tie. The two goals allowed were a season high.

The Auggies registered a 19-16 edge in shots (6-5 on goal), though the visitors totaled a 4-1 margin in corner kicks.

The Johnnies play host to No. 3 Gustavus Adolphus at 4 p.m. next Friday, Oct. 11, at Haws Field.
