SJU Basketball Picks Up 11th NABC Academic Award, Five Johnnies Named to Honors Court

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The 2022-23 Saint John's University basketball team earned its 11th-consecutive National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team Academic Excellence Award and five Johnnies were named to the 2022-23 NABC Honors Court on Thursday, July 20.

To be eligible for the Team Academic Excellence Award, a college or university must submit the grade points earned and hours attempted for each player on its official squad list for the academic year and carry a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.

The 25 Johnnies on the official roster combined for a 3.39 GPA.

To be eligible for the NABC Honors Court, student-athletes must be a junior or senior academically, a member of the 2022-23 roster, boast a 3.2 GPA or higher at the conclusion of the academic year and have spent at least one full year at the current institution.

The Johnnies recognized were (alphabetically, academic years are for 2022-23):

-Junior wing J.T. Gaffney (Wayzata, Minn./Minnetonka), a biology major;
-Junior wing Connor Schwob (Waconia, Minn.), a global business leadership major;
-Senior wing Elijah Sutton (Dover, Pa.), an accounting major; 
-Junior wing Ryan Thissen (Rosemount, Minn./Eastview), a biochemistry major;
-Junior post Ethan Youso (Virginia, Minn.), a computer science major.

SJU (17-10, 13-7 MIAC) recorded 10 home wins or more for the fifth-consecutive (full) season, finished second in the conference and reached the MIAC Playoff championship game for the fourth-straight tournament (and fifth in the last six) in 2022-23.
