Hague Breaks SJU Record in Javelin, Johnnies Win Eight Events at St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's track and field won eight events at St. Thomas' Joe Sweeney Invitational on Wednesday, May 3.

Senior Brett Hague (Brainerd, Minn.), the reigning MIAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week, broke SJU's program record in the javelin with a personal-best distance of 68.10 meters on his first throw of the night. The mark is good for third-best in NCAA Division III this spring. The previous record was 67.80 meters set by Tom Engwall '03 in 2003.

Two other Johnnies, junior Logan Hennen (Prior Lake, Minn.) and freshman Mitchell Degen (Brainerd, Minn.), followed Hague with season bests in second (52.91 meters) and fourth (49.57 meters), respectively.

Junior Joe Charbonneau (New Richmond, Wis.) led a five-Johnnie contingent in the pole vault's top six with a win at 4.72 meters. Freshman Kole Guth (St. Peter, Minn.) was second (4.32 meters) and junior Dan Eickhoff (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) took third (4.17 meters). Junior Max Doom (Edina, Minn.) and senior Mason DeGross (New Prague, Minn.) placed fifth and sixth at 4.17 meters.

The reigning MIAC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, senior Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) continued his winning ways by taking both the 100- (10.56) and 200-meter (21.41) dashes.

Senior Jaeden Frost (Omro, Wis.) won the hammer throw with a toss of 48.09 meters and claimed fourth in the shot put (14.68 meters). Sophomore Joe Mensen (Hudson, Wis./Hill-Murray) took third (46.55 meters) and senior Eli Mollet (Jefferson, S.D./Bishop Heelan, Iowa) was fourth (45.40 meters) in the hammer throw.

Senior Elijah Wade (Waco, Texas/Vanguard College Prep) won the Johnnies' sixth individual event in the triple jump (13.73 meters) and senior Alex Crnkovich (Omaha, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine) finished sixth (12.95 meters).

SJU's 4x100-meter relay team (Emanuel Popoca, Arthur, Brady Labine, Caden Wheeler) won the three-team race in 41.46 seconds and the 4x400-meter relay (Wheeler, Owen Montreuil, Labine, Ryan Conzemius) won in 3:19.85.

A trio of underclassmen finished second at the meet: sophomore Ethan Leonard (Chaska, Minn.) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:32.18); sophomore Zach Schaffer (Chaska, Minn.) in the long jump (6.71 meters); and freshman Nick St. Peter (Maple Grove, Minn.) in the 1,500 meters (3:57.46). Sophomore Eamon Cavanaugh (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) was eighth (4:02.84) in the 1,500.

Sophomore Alec Ungar (Eden Prairie, Minn./Chanhassen) tied for fourth in the high jump (1.91 meters) and placed sixth in the long jump (6.21 meters), while four Johnnies finished with fast times in the 800 meters' top eight, led by senior Nathan Clausing (Big Lake, Minn.) in fourth (1:53.40). Senior Dillon Diekmann (Lake Elmo, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) was just behind him in fifth (1:53.40), followed by senior Will Mattock (Maryville, Mo.) in seventh (1:54.76) and junior Carter Grove (Osakis, Minn.) in eighth (1:55.63).

Freshman Aiden Blaeser (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) claimed fourth (59.10) in the 400-meter hurdles and senior Charles Ellis (Long Lake, Minn./Orono) was fifth (1:00.07). Sophomore Alex Seiler (Albany, Minn.) finished seventh (1.81 meters) in the high jump and freshman Riley Buxell (Afton, Minn./Stillwater Area) placed eighth in both the 110- (16.92) and 400-meter (1:00.83) hurdles.

A pair of sophomores, Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.) and Anthony Thurk (St. Bonifacius, Minn./Waconia), begin the 2023 MIAC Decathlon at noon Thursday, May 4, at Carleton's Laird Stadium in Northfield. The decathlon begins with the 100-meter dash, followed by the long jump, shot put, high jump and 400-meter dash.
