LA CROSSE, Wis. – Saint John's track and field wrapped up its regular-season schedule with two out-of-state qualifiers on Thursday, May 18.

For each men's individual event contested, including the decathlon, the top 20 declared student-athletes will be accepted into the competition (top 22 for women) and the top 16 declared relay teams will participate at the 2023 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships May 25-27 at St. John Fisher's Polisseni Track and Field Complex in Rochester, N.Y.

The national entrants are scheduled to be announced tomorrow (Friday, May 19) on www.ncaa.com.

SJU's 4x100-meter relay team (Emanuel Popoca, Kevin Arthur, Brady Labine, Caden Wheeler) traveled to Rock Island, Ill., today for Augustana's Midwest Twilight and finished fifth with a time of 41.15 seconds. The time did not improve the relay's season-best of 41.11 the foursome used to win its second-consecutive MIAC title last Saturday (May 13).

A number of Johnnies ventured to La Crosse, Wis., for Wisconsin-La Crosse's Final Qualifier. Senior Elijah Wade (Waco, Texas/Vanguard College Prep) recorded a personal-best mark of 14.24 meters to take fourth in the triple jump. The cut (20th-best distance) in Division III, however, entering today was 14.62 meters.

Like Wade, senior Jaeden Frost (Omro, Wis.) posted a personal-best distance of 52.10 meters to finish fifth in the hammer throw, but the NCAA cut was 57.88 meters. Frost also claimed seventh (14.40 meters) in the shot put, which did not top his season-best of 15.02.

Nine Johnnies raced in the 800 meters, led by senior Nathan Clausing (Big Lake, Minn.) in fifth place with a time of 1:54.71. Senior Dillon Diekmann (Lake Elmo, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) was seventh (1:55.37). The NCAA cut was 1:50.61.

Senior Mitch Grand (Hutchinson, Minn.) took fifth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:54.28, the team's best this season, but it was seven seconds from the cut time of 3:47.75.

Sophomore Zach Schaffer (Chaska, Minn.) placed fifth with a mark of 6.94 meters in the long jump, but did not surpass his season-best of 6.98 meters he recorded to win the MIAC title last weekend.

Sophomore Jack Meyer (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) tallied another fifth-place finish (41.43 meters) in the javelin.
