SJU Fares Well With Limited Roster at St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's track and field competed at its second outdoor meet of the season – the St. Thomas' Tomcat Invitational – on Friday, April 7, at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.

The Johnnies recorded four top-three marks/times at the meet, which was not scored. SJU did not have a competitor in the 110-meter hurdles, 5,000 meters, long jump, triple jump or the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays.

Senior Brady Labine (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) placed second in the 400-meter hurdles (54.77) and three Johnnies finished in the pole vault's top six, led by junior Joe Charbonneau (New Richmond, Wis.) in second (4.67 meters). Freshman Kole Guth (St. Peter, Minn.) and senior Mason DeGross (New Prague, Minn.) reached 4.22 meters to finish fifth and sixth, respectively.

Junior Lloyd Young (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) finished third in the 1,500 meters, first among Division III runners, with a time of 3:54.98 and junior Carter Grove (Osakis, Minn.) was the next Division III participant (seventh overall) in 3:57.49.

Freshman Caden Wheeler (Andover, Minn.) was the Johnnies' fourth top-three finish – third – in the 400-meter dash (49.80).

Six Johnnies finished in the top five among NCAA Division III competitors:
-Senior Will Mattock (Maryville, Mo.), ninth (second among DIII) in the 800 meters (1:57.45);
-Freshman Nick St. Peter (Maple Grove, Minn.), 11th (third among DIII) in the 800 meters (1:57.88);
-Sophomore Alex Seiler (Albany, Minn.), eighth (fourth among DIII) in the high jump (1.80 meters);
-Senior Dillon Diekmann (Lake Elmo, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall), 11th (fifth among DIII) in the 1,500 meters (3:59.26);
-Sophomore Joe Mensen (Hudson, Wis./Hill-Murray), eighth (fifth among DIII) in the hammer (43.28 meters);
-Sophomore Emanuel Popoca (Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy), 10th (fifth among DIII) in the 200-meter dash (23.38).

The Johnnies' home meet and decathlon scheduled for next weekend (April 15-16) are canceled due to field conditions. SJU is likely to compete next Saturday, April 15, but has not decided on the location.
