Gutzmer Wins Individual Title as Johnnies Finish Second in Illinois

NORMAL, Ill. – Saint John's senior Thomas Gutzmer (Jordan, Minn.) earned medalist honors among the 212 golfers and the 14th-ranked Johnnies finished second out of 37 teams at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational on Saturday, April 8.

SJU entered the final round in a tie with Bethel for fourth place, 12 shots behind No. 13 Illinois Wesleyan, but recorded the day's best round – a 7-over par 291 – to finish three shots behind the Titans (+15, 587) with a two-round total of 590 (+18). No. 21 Aurora (Ill.) and BU tied for third at 592 (+20) and Wisconsin-Eau Claire finished fifth (+24, 596).

Gutzmer carded six birdies at Division I Illinois State's Weibring G.C. (par 71), including three to go -3 over his final eight holes, to finish with a 3-under par 68. He tied for the tournament lead with 10 birdies over the two days and led the field across the 21 par-4 holes (a collective -3) to win the field by four shots with a 139 (-4).

Sophomore Andrew Boemer (Eagan, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) totaled four birdies for an even-par 71 and tied for seventh overall with a 146 (+3).

Junior Blake Schuler (Waconia, Minn.) matched Boemer's four birdies for a 75 (+4) on Saturday. He tied for fourth in the tournament with seven total birdies and tied for 48th with a 153 (+10).

Juniors Sam Berger (Waconia, Minn.) and Nate Loxtercamp (Richmond, Minn./Melrose Area) recorded a 77 (+6) each. Berger tied with Schuler and nine others for 48th, and Loxtercamp was a shot behind in a tie for 59th (+11, 154).

SJU is scheduled to compete in two weeks (April 22-23) at Gustavus Adolphus' Bobby Krig Invitational.
