Gustavus Edges SJU Golf By 1 Shot, 289-290

MAPLE PLAIN, Minn. – No. 13 Saint John's golf recorded the event's top-three individual scores but fell to Gustavus Adolphus by one shot, 289-290, on Thursday, April 27, at Pioneer Creek G.C. (par 72) in Maple Plain.

The Gusties also won match play, 8-7. GAC edged the Johnnies by one shot (296-297) in last year's dual held on April 21 (2022) at Minnesota Valley C.C. in Bloomington.

Junior Blake Schuler (Waconia, Minn.) won the 30-man field with a 3-under par 69, while classmate Nate Loxtercamp (Richmond, Minn./Melrose Area) followed with a 70 (-2). The round was the seventh at par or below for each golfer this season.

Junior Mark Longhenry (Bloomington, Minn./Holy Angels) led SJU Blue, which finished third out of the six teams with a 297 (+9), with a 1-under par 71.

Senior Thomas Gutzmer (Jordan, Minn.) tied for eighth with a 74 (+2) and junior Sam Berger (Waconia, Minn.) and sophomore Andrew Boemer (Eagan, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) rounded out the Johnnies' five with a 77 (+5) each.

Junior Thomas Ellis (Sartell, Minn./Sartell-St. Stephen) tied Gutzmer with a 74 (+2) and two sophomores – Will Gruidl (Edina, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) and Cole Proctor (Brainerd, Minn.) – tied for 12th with a 76 (+4) for SJU Blue.

SJU hosts its annual Spring Invitational this Saturday and Sunday, April 29-30. The tournament begins with an 11 a.m. shotgun Saturday at Lynx National G.C. (par 72) in Sauk Centre and ends with a 10 a.m. shotgun Sunday at Monticello C.C. (par 71) in Monticello.
