SJU Track & Field Wins 5 of 9 Events at Gustavus Invite

ST. PETER, Minn. – Saint John's track and field won five events at Gustavus Adolphus' Lee Krough Invitational on Sunday, April 23.

All told, SJU won five of the nine events it had a competitor in (one Johnnie competed in two of the nine events). 

Sophomore thrower Joe Mensen (Hudson, Wis./Hill-Murray) won a pair of events, the discus (38.01 meters) and hammer (46.37 meters), while senior Brett Hague (Brainerd, Minn.) won the javelin with a season-best distance of 60.75 meters. Hague's mark enabled him to stay in 12th place in NCAA Division III this outdoor season. 

Senior Eli Mollet (Jefferson, S.D./Bishop Heelan, Iowa) finished second behind Mensen in the hammer (43.88 meters), and junior Logan Hennen (Prior Lake, Minn.) and freshman Carter McEachern (Zimmerman, Minn.) followed Hague in second (49.13 meters) and third (48.11 meters), respectively, in the javelin.

Freshman Kole Guth (St. Peter, Minn.) returned to his hometown and broke SJU's freshman record in the pole vault to win the event with a season-best height of 4.60 meters (15 feet, 1 inch). Freshman Josh Johnston (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) followed Guth in second (3.95 meters) to move into the MIAC's top-seven this spring. Andrew Norman '11 owned the previous freshman record of 4.59 meters (15 feet, ¾ inch) set in 2008.

SJU swept the top-five places in the 1,500 meters, led by junior Tommy Allen (Woodbury, Minn./St. Paul Academy) in first with a time of 4:02.88. Sophomore Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.) took third in the high jump with a season-best height of 1.80 meters and junior Kaleb Dewall (Red Wing, Minn.) placed fourth in the shot put (12.67 meters).

The Johnnies travel to Minneapolis for Division I Minnesota's Running on Hope Invitational on Wednesday, April 26. Field events begin at 11 a.m., followed by competition on the track at 3 p.m. from the Gophers' Track & Field Stadium.
