SJU Wins Five Events at Luther’s Norse Invite

DECORAH, Iowa – Saint John's track and field won five events and totaled 27 top-six marks/times at Luther's Norse Invitational on Saturday, April 15, in Decorah, Iowa.

Senior Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) won both the 100- (10.81) and 200-meter (21.82) dashes for the second time in two meets this outdoor season. Freshman Caden Wheeler (Andover, Minn.) and sophomore Emanuel Popoca (Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy) were fourth (22.73) and fifth (22.91), respectively, in the 200.

Four Johnnies placed in the pole vault's top five, led by junior Joe Charbonneau (New Richmond, Wis.) atop the podium at 4.50 meters. Freshman Kole Guth (St. Peter, Minn.) also cleared 4.50 meters, a season-best height on his second attempt, and claimed second. Senior Mason DeGross (New Prague, Minn.) followed in third (4.05 meters) and sophomore Andrew Adams (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) tied for fifth (3.60 meters). 

Senior Elijah Wade (Waco, Texas/Vanguard College Prep) took first in the triple jump with a season-best mark of 13.66 meters and classmate Alex Crnkovich (Omaha, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine) was fourth (13.01 meters).

Senior Brett Hague (Brainerd, Minn.) won the javelin with a throw of 57.10 meters, while two teammates followed in the top six: junior Logan Hennen (Prior Lake, Minn.) in third (50.43 meters) and freshman Mitchell Degen (Brainerd, Minn.) was sixth (45.27 meters). Hague also placed fifth in the hammer throw (41.59 meters), behind sophomore Joe Mensen (Hudson, Wis./Hill-Murray) in fourth (44.07 meters).

Three Johnnies crossed the finish line consecutively in the fourth heat of the 800 meters with season-best times to place third-fourth-fifth: freshman Nick St. Peter (1:57.37; Maple Grove, Minn.); senior Dillon Diekmann (1:56.60; Lake Elmo, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall); and senior Nathan Clausing (1:56.62; Big Lake, Minn.).

Sophomore Zach Schaffer (Chaska, Minn.) finished third overall, first among Division III competitors, in the long jump with a mark of 6.57 meters. Freshman Riley Buxell (Afton, Minn./Stillwater Area) claimed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.86) and sophomore Ryan Conzemius (La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas) was fifth overall, second among Division III runners, in the 400-meter dash (50.99).

Senior Tom Nemanich (Red Wing, Minn.) and sophomore Joe Gathje (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) finished fourth (10:22.73) and fifth (10:23.78), respectively, in the steeplechase, while sophomore Alec Ungar (Eden Prairie, Minn./Chanhassen) tied for fourth in the high jump (1.80 meters) and sophomore Alex Seiler (Albany, Minn.) placed sixth with the same mark (he cleared 1.80 on his second attempt to Ungar's first).

Senior Eli Mollet (Jefferson, S.D./Bishop Heelan Catholic, Iowa) and junior Kaleb Dewall (Red Wing, Minn.) placed first (12.64 meters) and second (12.57 meters) among Division III throwers (fifth and sixth overall) in the shot put, and senior Will Mattock (Maryville, Mo.) was sixth (4:05.63) in the 1,500 meters.

SJU's 4x400-meter relay (Wheeler, Mattock, Aiden Langheim, Owen Montreuil) finished second (3:26.47).

The Johnnies stay in the state for Gustavus Adolphus' Lee Krough Invitational at 10:30 a.m. next Sunday, April 23, in St. Peter.
