MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Saint John's track and field totaled 20 top-eight marks/times at Minnesota's Gopher Classic on Saturday, Feb. 4, in the Minnesota Fieldhouse.
Junior
Carter Grove (Osakis, Minn.) led the way for SJU with a first-place finish out of 33 runners in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:38.94.
Senior
Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) finished second in both the 60- and 200-meter dashes by 0.06 of a second, each time behind a sprinter from Division I Minnesota. He placed second in the 60 (6.94) behind Carlon Hosten (6.88) and was edged in the 200 (22.58) by Devin Augustine. Freshman
Caden Wheeler (Andover, Minn.) took fifth in the 200-meter dash (23.24) and sixth in the 60-meter sprint (7.17).
Senior
Elijah Wade (Waco, Texas/Vanguard College Prep) claimed second in the triple jump (13.56 meters) - by quarter of an inch to Ted Carey of Division II Concordia-St. Paul - and senior
Alex Crnkovich (Omaha, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine) placed sixth (12.78 meters).
Junior
Joe Charbonneau (New Richmond, Wis.) recorded a third-place height in the pole vault, a MIAC-best 4.61 meters, while freshman
Kole Guth (St. Peter, Minn.) and junior
Max Doom (Edina, Minn.) claimed seventh (4.16 meters) and eighth (4.01 meters).
Seniors
Alexei Hensel (Buffalo, Minn.) and
Will Mattock (Maryville, Mo.) finished third (1:25.88) and fourth (1:25.98), respectively, in the 600 meters, and freshman
Owen Montreuil (Jordan, Minn.) was the third Johnnie in the top eight in eighth (1:26.64).
Sophomore
Zach Schaffer (Chaska, Minn.) took fourth in the long jump (6.52 meters) and sophomore
Alec Ungar (Eden Prairie, Minn./Chanhassen) was seventh (6.23 meters). Ungar reached the podium in third place in the high jump (1.85 meters), while sophomores
Alex Seiler (Albany, Minn.) and
Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.) followed in seventh (1.75 meters) and eighth (1.70 meters).
In the 800 meters, freshman
Nick St. Peter (Maple Grove, Minn.) crossed the finish line sixth (2:03.14) and senior
Sam Rengo (Esko, Minn.) was eighth (2:04.15).
The Johnnies return home to host an invitational at 11 a.m. next Saturday, Feb. 11, in the Donald McNeely Spectrum.
