Johnnies Compete at Final Tune-Ups Before MIAC Championships

MANKATO, Minn. – Saint John's track and field won two events and totaled 29 top-eight marks/times at Division II MSU-Mankato's Maverick Invitational on Friday, Feb. 17.

Senior Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) led the Johnnies with a pair of season-best times Friday. He won the 200-meter dash in 22.49 seconds and placed second (6.92) in an all-Maverick field in the 60-meter dash. Arthur was also the final leg of the Johnnies' 4x400-meter relay (with Labine, Langheim and Montreuil) that finished first (3:31.80).

Three Johnnies earned runner-up finishes: senior Nathan Clausing (Big Lake, Minn.) in the 800 meters (1:58.66), senior Brady Labine (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) in the 600 meters (1:24.81) and sophomore Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.) in the 60-meter hurdles (9.08). Senior Dillon Diekmann (Lake Elmo, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) followed Clausing in fifth (1:59.62) and freshman Nick St. Peter (Maple Grove, Minn.) was eighth (2:00.90).

Three freshmen placed in the 400-meter dash's top eight, led by Caden Wheeler (Andover, Minn.) in third (51.31). Owen Montreuil (Jordan, Minn.) and Aiden Langheim (Jordan, Minn.) were seventh (52.96) and eighth (53.18), respectively.

The (two-time) reigning MIAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week, junior Joe Charbonneau (New Richmond, Wis.) placed fourth (4.57 meters) in the pole vault. Three Johnnies followed him in succession: freshman Kole Guth (St. Peter, Minn.) in sixth (4.42 meters), senior Mason DeGross (New Prague, Minn.) in seventh (4.12 meters) and junior Dan Eickhoff (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) in eighth (4.12 meters).

Senior Danny Kloeppner (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) crossed the finish line third in the mile run (4:36.63) and three teammates – sophomore Ethan Leonard (Chaska, Minn.), sophomore Joe Gathje (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) and senior Nico Merickel (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle) – followed consecutively in sixth (4:43.25), seventh (4:46.02) and eighth (4:47.41). Sophomore Aiden Chalmers (Chaska, Minn./Minnetonka) finished fifth in the 3,000 meters (9:23.88).

Sophomore Zach Schaffer (Chaska, Minn.) took fourth, first among Division III participants, with a season-best mark in the long jump (6.88 meters) and SJU had five of the top eight in the triple jump, led by senior Alex Crnkovich (Omaha, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine) in second (13.03 meters). Sophomore Anthony Thurk (St. Bonifacius, Minn./Waconia) was third (12.78 meters), Lelwica placed fifth (12.27 meters) and sophomore Alec Ungar (Eden Prairie, Minn./Chanhassen) was sixth (12.11 meters).

Senior Jaeden Frost (Omro, Wis.) claimed eighth in the weight throw (15.41 meters) and tied for eighth in the shot put (14.35 meters), and sophomore Alex Seiler (Albany, Minn.) placed eighth with a season-best height of 1.87 meters in the high jump.

Snowshoe Open
A pair of SJU distance runners competed in the 3,000 meters tonight at Division I Minnesota's Snowshoe Open in Minneapolis. Junior Lloyd Young (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) finished third among 27 runners, behind a pair of Gophers, in 8:23.15. Sophomore Eamon Cavanaugh (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) was 13th (8:49.59).

The Johnnies aim to defend last season's team title at the 2023 MIAC Indoor Championships next Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 25-26, at Macalester's Leonard Center in St. Paul. The meet begins with the first part of the first half of the heptathlon on Friday, Feb. 24.
