Johnnies Win Eight Events at Home Invite

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's track and field won its home invitational on Saturday, Feb. 11, in the Donald McNeely Spectrum.

The Johnnies won eight events and totaled 27 top-five finishes for 164 points, followed by Gustavus Adolphus (109) and Division II Southwest Minnesota State (81). SJU did not have a participant in either the 800, 3,000 or 5,000 meters.

Senior sprinter Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) continued his winning ways by taking first in both the 60- (6.94) and 200-meter (22.60) dashes.

The Johnnies placed first and second in three events. Junior Carter Grove (Osakis, Minn.) and sophomore Eamon Cavanaugh (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) went 1 (4:23.74)-2 (4:27.74) with season-best times in the mile run, and sophomore Ethan Leonard (Chaska, Minn.) followed in fourth (4:43.11).

Junior Joe Charbonneau (New Richmond, Wis.) improved his season-best height in the pole vault (4.65 meters) to win the event and freshman Kole Guth (St. Peter, Minn.) was second at 4.35 meters. Junior Daniel Eickhoff (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) tied for fourth (4.20 meters).

Sophomore Alec Ungar (Eden Prairie, Minn./Chanhassen) took first in the high jump with a MIAC-best height of 1.93 meters and classmate Alex Seiler (Albany, Minn.) was fourth (1.78 meters). Ungar also placed second (6.22 meters) in the long jump behind sophomore Zach Schaffer's (Chaska, Minn.) MIAC-best mark of 6.56 meters.

Senior Jaeden Frost (Omro, Wis.) won the shot put, among a deep field of 18 throwers, with a season-best toss of 15.02 meters. He also claimed fourth in the weight throw (16.10 meters).

Senior Elijah Wade (Waco, Texas/Vanguard College Prep) won the five-man field in the triple jump (13.17 meters), while senior Alex Crnkovich (Omaha, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine) and Schaffer each posted a long of 12.57 meters.

Five Johnnies crossed the finish line in succession in the 1,000 meters, led by senior Dillon Diekmann (Lake Elmo, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) in second (2:35.96). Seniors Nathan Clausing (Big Lake, Minn.), Will Mattock (Maryville, Mo.) and Sam Rengo (Esko, Minn.) followed in third (2:38.19), fourth (2:38.34) and fifth (2:38.48), respectively.

Senior Brady Labine (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) placed third in the 400-meter dash (50.67) and freshman Aiden Langheim (Jordan, Minn.) took third in the 600 meters (1:26.93). Freshman Aiden Blaeser (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) was fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.87).

The Johnnies 4x200-meter (1:35.01; Emanuel Popoca, Josh Sletta, Pierre Deutschlander, Henry Truebenbach) and 4x400-meter (3:35.46; Jorge Hernandez, Alexei Hensel, Langheim, Owen Montreuil) relays took third.

South Dakota State Indoor Classic
A pair of Johnnies competed at Division I South Dakota State's Indoor Classic. Junior Lloyd Young (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) finished ninth out of a whopping 82 runners (three total heats) in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:35.72, which is second-best in the MIAC this season.

Senior Mitch Grand (Hutchinson, Minn.) 19th out of 127 participants (eight heats) – first among NCAA Division III runners – with a time of 4:14.33 in the mile run.

The Johnnies travel south to compete at MSU-Mankato's Maverick Invitational at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17.
