SJU Swimming & Diving Faces UW-Eau Claire Saturday at St. Kate's

The Johnnie swimming and diving team faces Wisconsin-Eau Claire for a 1 p.m. dual (diving competition at 10:30 a.m.) on Saturday, Nov. 11, at St. Catherine's Butler Center Pool in St. Paul. - Live Video

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's won 10 events in a 160-83 dual victory at St. Olaf last Saturday (Nov. 4) in the Skoglund Center Natatorium in Northfield. The Johnnies totaled 24 top-three finishes on the afternoon.

Two Johnnies - junior Carter Larson (Sartell, Minn./Sartell-St. Stephen) and sophomore Brayden Slavik (Green Isle, Minn./Chaska) - won two events on the day. Larson took first in the 100- (47.99) and 200-yard (1:48.63) freestyles, while Slavik touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke (54.11) and 1,000-yard freestyle (10:06.62).

The Johnnies swept the top-three times in the 100 Free as junior Colby Kern (Delano, Minn.) took second in 49.88, 0.01 ahead of freshman Alex King (Minot, N.D.) in third. King also won the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.52).

Junior Langston Philion (Maple Grove, Minn.) placed first in the 100-yard butterfly (54.31), while sophomore Clay Megaw (Monticello, Minn.) and freshman Simon Nyangamoi (Harrisburg, S.D.) went 1 (1:00.02)-2 (1:03.12) in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Junior Connor Thayer (Prior Lake, Minn.) took first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:08.30) and second, behind Slavik, in the 1,000 Free (10:43.61).

Junior Eli Grabinski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) made his 2023-24 debut and won the 1-meter dive with a score of 270.07 and took second on the 1-meter board (162.00). Freshman Cody Watts (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) took third in both the 1- (148.88) and 3-meter (241.12) dives.

SJU's 200-yard freestyle relay (Larson, Carsten Reuter, Thayer, Nyangamoi) won the race by over two seconds in 1:29.27, while the 200-yard medley (Slavik, Megaw, Philion, Kern) finished second, 0:00.12 behind the Oles in 1:38.72.

A LOOK AT THE BLUGOLDS: Wisconsin-Eau Claire won its third-consecutive dual meet to start the 2023-24 season – a 188.5-111.5 decision at Wisconsin-La Crosse – last Saturday (Nov. 4). Freshman Blake Wallen swept both diving events - scoring a 268.25 on the 3-meter and 282.30 on the 1-meter - and the Blugolds won all but three of the swimming events. Junior Kadin Denner led the way with three individual wins: the 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard individual medley and 500-yard freestyle. He was also a member of the victorious 200-yard medley relay team. Sophomore Zhander Rowley swept the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes, while senior Sam Ryf won the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard backstroke.

SO FAR IN THE MIAC: The Johnnies currently boast 55 top-10 times in the MIAC this season, including 17 in the top three.
