at Saint John's 4, Gustavus Adolphus 1 (Jan. 6)
Eight Johnnies recorded a point as SJU returned to competition with a 4-1 win over Gustavus last Friday (Jan. 6) at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. The game was the first in nearly a month (Dec. 10) for SJU, which outshot the Gusties by a 42-18 margin in the victory.
Following a scoreless first period, Gustavus was awarded a five-minute power play following a major penalty for kneeing 1:54 into the second. The Johnnies, however, matched the Gusties' two shots on goal during the man advantage, including a shorthanded goal from sophomore forward
Matt DeRosa (Alpharetta, Ga.) on a two-on-1 rush from freshman defenseman
Mason Campbell (Rosemount, Minn.) with 15 seconds left in GAC's power play. The shorthanded goal was SJU's fourth of the season, as well as DeRosa's first tally of the season and fifth of his collegiate career.
Campbell made it 2-0 with a shot from the blue line, through traffic, for his third goal of the season with 9:19 left in the second period and junior forward
Josh Maucieri (Crosby, Minn.) extended SJU's lead with his third goal of the season 12:25 into the third.
Kylar Fenton erased the shutout for GAC on a tic-tac-toe goal with 4:19 remaining, but senior captain
Auggie Moore (Edina, Minn.) ended the game's scoring with an empty-net goal – his 80th career point – just before the horn sounded.
Sophomore goaltender
Bailey Huber (Mahtomedi, Minn.) made 17 saves to improve to 5-2-2 on the year.
Saint John's 4, at Gustavus Adolphus 0 (Jan. 7)
The Johnnies completed the weekend sweep of Gustavus with a 4-0 shutout on Saturday night (Jan. 7) in St. Peter.
Campbell scored the game's first two goals in the second period and Huber made 12 saves to record his first collegiate shutout for SJU, which outshot the Gusties by a 31-12 margin.
Just like Friday's 4-1 home win, SJU found the scoreboard first with a shorthanded goal in the second period – this time from Campbell – unassisted with 6:53 left in the frame. Campbell, who tallied an even-strength goal and an assist Friday night, gave the Johnnies a two-goal lead 4:04 later when he put away a rebound for his fifth goal of the season.
Junior forward
Lewis Crosby (Edina, Minn.) extended the margin with his fifth goal of the year and 40th point as a Johnnie 3:58 into the third period and DeRosa ended the game's scoring with his second goal of the weekend on a nice one-timer from classmate
Garrett Smith (Eden Prairie, Minn.) with 5:05 remaining.

IN 2021: SJU ended its power-play drought with two tallies from junior forward
Nick Michel (Waconia, Minn.), including the game-winner 59 seconds into overtime, in a 3-2 victory at Wisconsin-Stout last Nov. 13 (2021) in Menomonie, Wis. SJU killed off a roughing-the-goaltender penalty over the final 1:54 of regulation and the first six seconds of overtime, only to earn a power play for the same offense 10 seconds after the Blue Devils' expired.
Michel drove home a tic-tac-toe one-timer from senior forward
Henry Enebak (Lakeville, Minn.) and defenseman
Cole Souto '22 with 4:01 left in the extra session to end the Johnnies' winless streak at four games. SJU finished 2-for-4 on the man advantage.
Souto gave SJU a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season (16th of his career) and his 40th career point 12:24 into the first period. The Johnnies saw their scoreless streak on the power play end at 0-for-24 when Michel scored his first PPG of the game 1:14 later.

A LOOK AT THE POINTERS: Wisconsin-Stevens Point (9-2-3, 6-0-0 WIAC) split a pair of home games last weekend as the Pointers suffered their second loss of the season, 3-2 in overtime to Hamline, on Friday (Jan. 6). UWSP bounced back, however, and blanked then-No. 4 Augsburg with a 4-0 score on Saturday night (Jan. 7).Twenty-three Pointers have a point this season and are led by junior forward Conor Witherspoon's 11 (7g/4a). LAST SEASON: Then-No. 11 Wisconsin-Stevens Point scored two shorthanded goals in the game's final 2:14 to defeat SJU 4-2 last Nov. 12 (2021) in Stevens Point, Wis.
The Johnnies were given their sixth power play of the game with 2:52 remaining and the game tied at 2-2, but Connor Scahill scored a controversial, shorthanded goal with 2:14 left. Goaltender
Michael Magnuson '22 made the save with his glove, but an official ruled that the puck crossed the goal line. The goal judge disagreed, but the officials let the goal stand. Magnuson tied a career high with 33 saves in the loss.
The bizarre goal was another late swing of momentum against the Johnnies. The third consecutive, to be exact. The Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) scored the game-tying goal, with an extra attacker on the power play (6-on-4), with 32 seconds remaining the previous weekend's (Nov. 7) 4-4 tie. Three days later (Nov. 10), Bethel scored the game-winning goal as the overtime horn sounded in 1-0 loss to open the MIAC schedule.
Carter Roo ended the scoring for UWSP with another shorthanded goal, thanks to an empty net, with 1:45 left. The Pointers gained an early 1-0 lead 30 seconds into the game, but senior forward
