28 Johnnies Receive Academic All-MIAC Honors in Track & Field

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Twenty-eight Saint John's University track and field student-athletes earned 2021-22 Winter and Spring Academic All-MIAC honors on Monday, June 27.

SJU led the MIAC with 145 male honorees during the 2021-22 academic year, followed by Gustavus Adolphus (134) and Carleton (113). The Johnnies had 86 fall honorees (cross country, football, soccer), ahead of Gustavus (80) and St. Olaf (67).

Those honored (listed alphabetically) include:

-Sophomore Tommy Allen (Woodbury, Minn./St. Paul Academy), a biochemistry major (pre-medicine emphasis) with a 4.0 GPA;
-Junior Riley Berg (Bemidji, Minn.), a biology major with a 3.83 GPA;
-Senior Seth Cattoor (Marshall, Minn.), a political science major with a 3.62 GPA;
-Sophomore Carson Davis (New Prague, Minn.), a computer science major with a 3.50 GPA;
-Junior Mason DeGross (New Prague, Minn.), a biology and psychology double-major with a 3.64 GPA;
-Senior Dillon Diekmann (Lake Elmo, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall), an accounting major with a 3.94 GPA;
-Junior Charles Ellis (Long Lake, Minn./Orono), an economics major with a 3.86 GPA;
-Sophomore Jacob Gathje (Omaha, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine), a mathematics major with a 4.0 GPA;
-Senior Matt Gish (Bemidji, Minn.), a biochemistry major with a 3.98 GPA;
-Senior Andy Goldsmith (Tulsa, Okla./Cascia Hall), an integrative science major with a 3.84 GPA;
-Junior Mitch Grand (Hutchinson, Minn.), an accounting major with a 3.50 GPA;
-Sophomore Carter Grove (Osakis, Minn.), a computer science major with a 4.0 GPA;
-Junior Brett Hague (Brainerd, Minn.), an accounting major with a 3.72 GPA;
-Sophomore Logan Hennen (Prior Lake, Minn.), an accounting major with a 3.88 GPA;
-Junior Alexei Hensel (Buffalo, Minn.), an environmental studies major with a 3.57 GPA;
-Junior Danny Kloeppner (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park), a political science major with a 3.50 GPA;
-Senior Max Krause (Downers Grove, Ill./North), a Hispanic studies and political science double-major with a 3.97 GPA;
-Junior Jacob Lipke (Stewart, Minn./Hutchinson), a mathematics major with a 3.96 GPA;
-Junior Will Mattock (Maryville, Mo.), a biochemistry major with a 3.77 GPA;
-Senior Nathan Meyer (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina), a communication major with a 3.88 GPA;
-Junior Tom Nemanich (Red Wing, Minn.), a philosophy and psychology double-major with a 3.69 GPA;
-Junior Charlie Otto (Delano, Minn.), an economics major with a 3.78 GPA;
-Junior Maguire Petersen (Hutchinson, Minn.), a biology major (pre-chiropractic emphasis) with a 3.94 GPA;
-Junior Sam Rengo (Esko, Minn.), a history and political science double-major with a 3.64 GPA;
-Senior Shawn Schindler (Maple Grove, Minn.), a nursing major with a 3.99 GPA;
-Junior Josh Sletta (Madelia, Minn.), a nutrition major with a 3.76 GPA;
-Sophomore Max Vogel (Bayport, Minn./Stillwater Area), a computer science major with a 3.78 GPA;
-Junior Lloyd Young (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy), an accounting major with a 3.91 GPA.

Student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior or senior with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 on a 4.00 scale to qualify for Academic All-MIAC recognition. Transfers, like freshmen, must complete a full academic year to be eligible the following season. 

Athletically, student-athletes must be a member of a MIAC-sponsored, varsity team and be academically and athletically eligible. The student-athlete must have utilized a season of participation (per NCAA and MIAC definitions) and have remained on the sports roster through the conclusion of the sports season.

The Academic All-MIAC honor is the third consecutive for Cattoor, Diekmann, Gish, Goldsmith and Schindler, and the second for 14 others: DeGross, Ellis, Grand, Hague, Hensel, Lipke, Mattock, Meyer, Nemanich, Otto, Petersen, Rengo, Sletta and Young.

Allen earned the MIAC's Elite 22 Award for both men's indoor and outdoor track and field, which are given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA among the All-MIAC honorees.

SJU won its 13th MIAC outdoor team title, and first since 2011, May 13-14 in Winona and tied for 26th at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships held in Geneva, Ohio, thanks to All-America performances from Hague in the javelin (fourth place) and Petersen in the decathlon (fifth place).
