COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University seniors
Maguire Petersen (Hutchinson, Minn.) and
Shawn Schindler (Maple Grove, Minn.) were named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America cross country/track and field team on Wednesday, June 22.
Schindler was named to the Academic All-America first team for the second consecutive season, while Petersen earned second-team honors.
Nominees must be of a sophomore academic standing or better, with a 3.30 GPA or higher. The Academic All-District and All-America teams are voted upon and selected by registered members of CoSIDA.
Schindler graduated May 7 with a 3.98 GPA in nursing. He earned All-America distinction in 2021, thanks to a fourth-place finish in the pole vault at the NCAA outdoor meet, and finished 12th nationally in the event last month at nationals. Schindler tied with sophomore
Joe Charbonneau (New Richmond, Wis.) for the MIAC title (4.56 meters) and is a five-time All-Region honoree (two indoors, three outdoors).
A biology major (pre-chiropractic emphasis) with a 3.94 GPA and the 2022 MIAC Outstanding Field Athlete in both the indoor and outdoor seasons, Petersen earned All-America honors (top eight) with a fifth-place finish in the decathlon at the 2022 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships. He recorded six personal-best marks/times in the 10 events for a program-record 6,932 points, which topped the previous school record (6,802) set by current Saint Benedict soccer coach Steve Kimble '99 in 1999. He is the fourth Johnnie to earn All-America honors in the decathlon and first since Brayden Wagner '09 in 2009: Dan Besemann '95 in 1995 (seventh), Kimble in 1999 (sixth) and Wagner (sixth). Petersen also qualified for nationals in the high jump, where he tied for 19th.
Petersen won the MIAC's decathlon for the second consecutive season with a total of 6,677 points May 5-6 at Carleton. He joined Kimble as the second Johnnie to win the MIAC decathlon twice, let alone back-to-back. Petersen also took second in both the high jump and javelin to bring his All-MIAC (top three individually, champion relay) total to eight (three indoors, five outdoors).
He was named the recipient of the 2022 Fr. Wilfred Theisen Student-Athlete of the Year Award, sponsored by the J-Club, May 25. The award recognizes an SJU varsity, senior student-athlete (or two) who has excelled in the classroom and in their sport. Petersen will be honored during the J-Club Hall of Honor induction ceremony on Homecoming Saturday, Oct. 1, in Collegeville.
A seven-time national entrant (three indoors, four outdoors) and nine-time All-Region honoree (four indoors, five outdoors), Petersen earned All-America honors with a sixth-place finish in the heptathlon at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March and tied for eighth in the high jump at last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships.
