MONTICELLO, Minn. - Saint John's golf completed the weekend sweep of its home tournaments with a five-shot victory at the SJU Spring Invitational on Sunday, April 24, at Monticello C.C. (par 71).

The Johnnies won yesterday's SJU Winter Classic by one shot at Lynx National G.C. (par 72) in Sauk Centre. The scheduled, two-day SJU Spring Invitational was split into two events due to the poor weather this spring and to accommodate the need for competitions. Although SJU has already qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship May 10-13 at Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., programs must play four events in the spring to qualify for an at-large berth to nationals.

SJU again battled rain, sleet, and windy conditions - sustained winds near 20 MPH with gusts over 30 throughout the round - and totaled a 298 (+14) for its seventh win in nine competitions this season. No. 19 Gustavus Adolphus finished second (+19, 303), followed by a three-way tie for third (+25, 309) between Bethel, Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Wisconsin-Stout.

Three Johnnies on the first-place team finished in the top 10 (four in the top 13). Junior Thomas Gutzmer (Jordan, Minn.) led the way with a 2-over par 73 to tie for third overall. He was the lone golfer among the 90-man field to finish even across the nine par-4 holes.

Sophomore Nate Loxtercamp (Richmond, Minn./Melrose Area) tied for fifth with a 74 (+3) and classmate Blake Schuler (Waconia, Minn.) tied for eighth with a 75 (+4), thanks to a birdie on No. 18.

Another sophomore, Parker Bartels (Oxbow, N.D./Kindred) tied for 13th (+5, 76) and sophomore Glavine Schugel (New Ulm, Minn.), who went 7-over par on his final six holes, finished with an 80 (+9).

Sophomore Sam Berger (Waconia, Minn.) led SJU Blue, which tied for seventh with a 315 (+31), with a 4-over par 75 to tie with Schuler. Freshman Andrew Boemer (Eagan, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) added a 77 (+6).

Sophomore Mark Longhenry (Bloomington, Minn./Holy Angels) led 10-place SJU White (+39, 323) with a 79 (+8).
