BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - Saint John's golf opened its spring season with a one-shot loss to No. 20 Gustavus Adolphus, 297-296, on Thursday, April 21, at Minnesota Valley C.C. (par 73) in Bloomington.
The Gusties' Jacob Pedersen and Wyatt Wasko tied for first in the 20-man field with a 2-under par 71 each.
Sophomore
Glavine Schugel (New Ulm, Minn.), junior
Thomas Gutzmer (Jordan, Minn.) and sophomore
Blake Schuler (Waconia, Minn.) all birdied the par-5, 600-yard No. 18 to cut GAC's lead to one.
Schugel led the Johnnies with a 1-under par 72, including five birdies on the back nine, to finish third. The round was his ninth at par or below this season.
Gutzmer finished sixth (+1, 74) and Schuler was one shot behind him in a tie for seventh (+2, 75). Schuler eagled the par-5, 556-yard No. 15.
Sophomore
Nate Loxtercamp (Richmond, Minn./Melrose Area) claimed ninth with a 76 (+3), despite an eight on the par-3 No. 7, and classmate
Sam Berger (Waconia, Minn.) double-bogeyed No. 18 for a 78 (+5).
Sophomore
Parker Bartels (Oxbow, N.D./Kindred) and freshman
Andrew Boemer (Eagan, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) led SJU Blue (+26, 318) with a 77 (+4) to tie for 10th.
The Johnnies host two, single-round events this Saturday and Sunday, April 23-24. The SJU Winter Classic will be held Saturday (11 a.m.) at Lynx National G.C. (par 72) in Sauk Centre, followed by the SJU Spring Invitational on Sunday (8:30 a.m.) at Monticello C.C. (par 71) in Monticello.
