Petersen Breaks SJU’s Heptathlon Record at NDSU, Johnnies Represent DIII Well at Gopher Classic

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Saint John's junior Maguire Petersen (Hutchinson, Minn.) broke the program record in the heptathlon to finish second at Division I North Dakota State's Bison Open on Saturday, Feb. 5.

Petersen completed the two-day, seven-event competition with 4,868 points, topping the previous record of 4,753 set by Michael Leither '08 in 2008. Petersen claimed second in the 1,000 meters (3:08.41) and third in four events: 60-meter dash (7.20), 60-meter hurdles (8.77), high jump (2.00 meters) and pole vault (3.80 meters). 

Sophomore Logan Hennen (Prior Lake, Minn.) placed 17th (3,732 points) in the 22-man field and freshman Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.) was 20th (3,581).

The bulk of SJU's track and field team competed Saturday at Division I Minnesota's Gopher Classic in Minneapolis, while 12 Johnnies participated - and won two events - Friday in a dual at Macalester.

The Johnnies led NCAA Division III competitors in a number of events at the Gopher Classic.

Senior Michael Wallace (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Anne's) and junior Elijah Wade (Waco, Texas/Vanguard College Prep) claimed the top two marks, 13.73 (a MIAC-best this season) and 13.67 meters, in the triple jump.

Junior Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) finished first among Division III sprinters, third overall, with a time of 6.91 seconds in the 60-meter dash. Senior Ryan Miller (Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace) followed in fifth overall (6.93). Arthur was also fourth - first among Division III competitors - in the 200-meter dash (22.87), two spots ahead of senior Jack Young (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) in sixth (23.16).

Freshman Alec Ungar (Eden Prairie, Minn./Chanhassen) took second in the long jump, first among Division III competitors, with a mark of 6.33 meters and also placed third in the high jump (1.93 meters).

Junior Lloyd Young (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) placed third in the mile run, first among Division III runners, with a MIAC-best time of 4:13.79. Classmate Mitch Grand (Hutchinson, Minn.) was behind him in sixth (4:17.24).

Senior Shawn Schindler (Maple Grove, Minn.) and sophomore Joe Charbonneau (New Richmond, Wis.) finished second (4.67 meters) and third (4.37 meters), respectively, to lead Division III in the pole vault. Schindler's height is tops in the MIAC so far this season.

Juniors Will Mattock (Maryville, Mo.) and Sam Rengo (Esko, Minn.) finished third (2:03.99) and fifth (2:04.70), respectively, in the 800 meters and senior Brady Labine (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) was sixth in the 400 meters (51.07), first among Division III participants. 

Junior Eli Mollet (Jefferson, S.D./Bishop Heelan Catholic, Iowa) led a contingent of five Johnnies with a sixth-place finish (17.36 meters) in the weight throw. Mollet also led SJU in seventh (13.82 meters) in the shot put.

The Johnnies return home to host an invitational at 11 a.m. next Saturday, Feb. 12, in the Donald McNeely Spectrum.
