SPECTATOR POLICY: Saint John's University updated the spectator policy for its home basketball games in Sexton Arena.
-Masks are required at all times (this has been the policy all season long).
-Spectators must maintain 6 feet of social distancing (and 12 feet from student-athletes/coaches/staff).
-Capacity will be reduced to 70 percent. Seating will be staggered by section, every-other row, for social distancing.
-Fans/parents must sit within their family or friend group and should remain in their seats for the duration of the event (no moving seats, socializing, etc.).
-Fans will not be allowed to gather with the student-athletes at the conclusion of the game.
-The concession stand will not be open.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (16-3, 13-1 MIAC) extended its win streak to five games with a 72-51 victory over Bethel Wednesday night (Feb. 2) in Collegeville. The Johnnies opened the second half with a 12-0 run and led by as much as 27 in the victory. SJU shot 60.7 percent (17-for-28) overall and 7-for-13 from three-point range in the second stanza to finish at 54.7 percent (29-for-53) from the floor.
Freshman guard
Kooper Vaughn (St. Charles, Minn.) led all scorers with a career-high 21 points on 7-for-9 shooting (4-for-6 from behind the arc).
Senior guard
Colton Codute (Wayzata, Minn./Orono) was the other Johnnie in double figures with 10 points and led SJU with five rebounds. Ten different Johnnies scored two points or more on the night.
BU scored eight of the game's first 10 points, but SJU answered with a 27-17 advantage to take a four-point lead (29-25) into the break. The Royals missed their first 11 shot attempts from long range, including a 0-for-10 showing in the first half. Joey Kidder led the visitors with 10 points and five boards.
SJU out-rebounded BU 27-23 and scored 14 points off 15 Royal turnovers.
FRESHMAN 3'S: Vaughn has started all 19 games for SJU so far this season and currently leads the MIAC in both three-pointers made (47) and three-pointers attempted (116). His .405 shooting percentage from long range is fourth-best in the conference among those with 70 attempts or more. The 47 treys are nine behind SJU's single-season record for a freshman set by Chris Schwartz '11 in 2007-08 (26 games). Schwartz's three-point percentage of .368 (56-for-152) led the Johnnies that season.

Zach Hanson (New Prague, Minn.) graduated in May 2021 but took advantage of his NCAA-granted, extra year of eligibility (due to the COVID-19 pandemic) to return for the 2021-22 campaign. The Johnnies totaled a 23-4 record (19-1 MIAC) during his freshman season in 2017-18. All told, the five have made three NCAA Tournament appearances (2018-20) and won two MIAC regular-season (2018, 2020) and playoff titles (2019-20).
ONE VOTE: SJU received a vote in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll released Monday (Jan. 31). Despite not playing two games last week due to COVID-19 protocols, Augsburg moved up one spot to No. 22.

A LOOK AT THE SCOTS: Macalester (9-10, 6-8 MIAC) saw its win streak of five games come to an end with a 67-60 home loss to Carleton Wednesday night (Feb. 2). Mac led by as much as seven in the first half and took a five-point lead (34-29) into intermission. Carleton, however, started the second half with a 12-0 run, though the Scots battled back to tie the game at 41-41. The lead exchanged hands six times over the next three minutes until the home team went on a 7-0 run. Down 58-56, Carleton hit back-to-back three-pointers to take a four-point lead and seal the victory.
Caleb Williams leads Mac in scoring (17.5 ppg.), while Gabriel Ramos is second (11.8 ppg.) with a team-leading 5.5 rebounds per contest. Cob Gold is the third Scot in double figures with an average of 10.9.
IN DECEMBER: SJU shot 72.7 percent (16-for-22) from the field in the first half, including a perfect 9-for-9 from three-point range, in an 85-62 win at Macalester earlier this season on Dec. 11 in St. Paul. The Johnnies finished the game at 60 percent (30-for-50) overall and 68.4 percent (13-for-19) from behind the arc for their sixth consecutive victory. The NCAA Division III record for consecutive three-pointers made in a game is 12 (Oglethorpe vs. Berry on Dec. 3, 2016).
SJU held a slim 26-24 lead over Macalester with 10 minutes left in the first half, but the visitors posted an 11-0 run. The Scots cut the deficit to eight (40-32), but the Johnnies responded with a 9-3 run to gain a 49-35 halftime lead. SJU led by as much as 25, and as little as 12, the rest of the way.
Vaughn led SJU with a career-high 20 points on a perfect afternoon from the floor, 7-for-7 overall and 6-for-6 from behind the arc, and also grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
