Cobbers Top Johnnies in Evenly Matched Game

Box Score

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Saint John's hockey dropped a 4-1 decision to Concordia-Moorhead on Thursday, Feb. 3, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (HBNHC) in St. Cloud.

The Cobbers (11-7-2, 8-2-1 MIAC) iced the game with two empty-net goals, including the final tally with 0:00.1 remaining.

Concordia found the back of the net first, 41 seconds after SJU (11-6-2, 5-3-1 MIAC) generated six power-play shots but did not score, on a goal from Brady Tatro 7:01 into the second period. Hunter Olson made it 2-0 in favor of CC with his first goal of the season, a direct one-timer from a faceoff, 6:22 later.

Sophomore defenseman Max Osborne (Anchorage, Alaska) cut SJU's deficit in half with his fourth goal of the season - in his first game back after missing the previous three due to injury - on a nice tip-in in front from sophomore Josh Maucieri (Crosby, Minn.) with 3:16 left in the second.

Tanner Breidenbach tallied the first empty-netter with 1:38 to play and Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe, the reigning MIAC Men's Hockey Athlete of the Week, ended the scoring on a 2-on-1 just before the final horn.

Senior goaltender Mac Berglove (Elk River, Minn.) made 25 saves in the loss as the visitors finished with a narrow 29-28 edge in shots. The Johnnies went 0-for-3 on the power play, including two empty chances in the third period.

The Cobbers are now 5-1-1 in their last seven games at the HBNHC, which snapped a 1-16-1 slump in the building (from 2002-14).

The two teams wrap up the series with an 8 p.m. puck-drop on Friday, Feb. 4, at the Moorhead Ice Arena.
