A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (2-1 overall) went 1-1 last weekend in Wisconsin.

at Wisconsin-Eau Claire 4, Saint John's 3 (OT)
SJU suffered a 4-3 loss in overtime at Wisconsin-Eau Claire last Friday (Nov. 4). Connor Szmul scored the game-winner 2:14 into the 3-on-3 overtime for UWEC.

Following a scoreless first period, senior captain Auggie Moore (Edina, Minn.) gave SJU a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal, his first of the season and 32nd of his career, 3:15 into the second frame.

The Blugolds were whistled for a penalty following Moore's goal and senior forward Nick Michel (Waconia, Minn.) made it 2-0 with another power-play tally 1:23 later. The goal was his first of the season and 11th as a Johnnie. A pair of junior forwards from Edina, Max Borst and Lewis Crosby, were credited with the assists.

UWEC cut its deficit in half, 2-1, on a power-play goal of its own from Quinn Green with 12:31 remaining and tied it with a rebound tally from Ryan Green 2:23 later.

Michel gave the lead back to SJU on a rebound from senior Henry Enebak's (Lakeville, Minn.) shot on goal with 6:26 remaining, but Ryan Green tied it again at 3-3 during a 4-on-4 with 5:02 left.

Freshman goaltender Jon Howe (Chanhassen, Minn.) made his collegiate debut and stopped his first 25 shots. He finished with 32 saves in the loss.

Saint John's 4, at Northland (Wis.) 1
SJU scored four unanswered goals, including three on the power play, in a 4-1 road win at Northland (Wis.) on Saturday (Nov. 5). The Johnnies finished 3-for-8 on the man advantage in the victory and 5-for-12 (41.7 percent) for the two-game weekend.

The Lumberjacks gained an early 1-0 lead on a goal from Cameron Coutre, Northland's first shot on net, 6:35 into the game.

Senior forward Joe Papa (St. Charles, Ill.) tied the game for SJU with 53 seconds left in the opening frame, his second goal of the season and fourth of his career.

Crosby, the Johnnies' leader in goals with 17 last season, tallied the first of his two power-play goals of the afternoon 5:35 into the second period.

Borst gave the Johnnies a 3-1 lead with a power-play goal of his own at the 15:07 mark of the second and Crosby ended the game's scoring with his second tally at 12:58 of the third.

Sophomore goaltender Bailey Huber (Mahtomedi, Minn.) improved to 2-0 in two collegiate starts with the victory. He stopped his final 17 shots faced.

SJU out-shot Northland by a 32-18 margin. The home team was whistled for nine penalties totaling 26 minutes.

BETTER START ON THE PP: The three power-play goals last Saturday increased the Johnnies' output to 31.3 percent (5-for-16) through this season's first three games. The performance is a welcomed improvement compared to last season, when SJU went 0-for-24 on the man advantage through the first five games (2-for-34 through the first seven games) and 5-for-73 (6.8 percent) in the first 16 contests.

RECEIVING VOTES: SJU lost a vote, from three to two, in the latest USCHO Division III poll released Monday (Nov. 7). Wisconsin-Eau Claire cracked the top 15 at No. 15, while Wisconsin-River Falls gained a vote (from six to seven) despite having a loss to the Johnnies on Oct. 29.

A LOOK AT THE COBBERS: Concordia (2-2 overall), like SJU, split its games last weekend. The Cobbers scored two goals in the third period to earn a 3-1 win Friday at Northland, but allowed four unanswered goals in a 5-4 loss at Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday. Sophomore forward Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe leads the team with six points (2g/4a), two ahead of a three-way tie between junior defenseman Liam Haslam (0g/4a), senior defenseman Jaret Lalli (0g/4a) and sophomore forward Mason Plante (2g/2a) with four apiece. Three goaltenders have combined for a 3.49 GAA and a .867 save percentage (91 saves) so far this season. The Cobbers are just 2-for-20 (10 percent) on the power play.

LAST SEASON: SJU and CC split last season's meetings with 4-1 wins on the other's home ice.

Concordia 4, at Saint John's 1 (Feb. 3, 2022)
The Cobbers iced the game with two empty-net goals, including the final tally with 0:00.1 remaining.

Concordia found the back of the net first, 41 seconds after SJU generated six power-play shots but did not score, on a goal from Brady Tatro 7:01 into the second period. Hunter Olson made it 2-0 in favor of CC with his first goal of the season, a direct one-timer from a faceoff, 6:22 later.

Max Osborne cut SJU's deficit in half with his fourth goal of the season - in his first game back after missing the previous three due to injury - on a nice tip-in in front from junior Josh Maucieri (Crosby, Minn.) with 3:16 left in the second.

Tanner Breidenbach tallied the first empty-netter with 1:38 to play and Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe, the MIAC Men's Hockey Athlete of the Week at the time, ended the scoring on a 2-on-1 just before the final horn.

Goaltender Mac Berglove '21 made 25 saves in the loss as the visitors finished with a narrow 29-28 edge in shots. The Johnnies went 0-for-3 on the power play, including two empty chances in the third period.

Saint John's 4, at Concordia 1 (Feb. 4, 2022)
SJU broke a 1-1 tie with three third-period goals to earn a 4-1 win and series split. All four Johnnie goals were scored by underclassmen in a game that started around 8:25 p.m.

Maucieri scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on the power-play, his fourth tally of the season, 32 seconds into the third period.

Sophomore defenseman Cooper Anderson (White Bear Lake, Minn.) lit the lamp with his first collegiate goal, a shot from the right circle with a screen in front, 1:51 later.

Sophomore forward Jackson Sabo (Rosemount, Minn.) ended the scoring with his second goal of the season, and fifth point in six games as a Johnnie, with 7:44 remaining.

Michel gave the Johnnies a 1-0 lead with his ninth goal of the season 5:59 into the second period, 1:58 after senior forward Dan Wieber (St. Joseph, Minn.) hit the crossbar on a breakaway.

The Cobbers tied the game at 1-1, however, when Mason Plante scored with 11:36 left in the second.

Berglove made 37 saves to collect his 10th win of the season (10-4-2 record).

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 46-37-6 against Concordia since the 1984-85 season, including a 15-5-2 record at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. SJU has won or tied 34 of the last 48 meetings overall (31-14-3 record).
