Leads Slip Away from SJU in OT Loss

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Saint John's hockey suffered a 4-3 loss in overtime at Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Friday, Nov. 4.

Connor Szmul scored the game-winner 2:14 into the 3-on-3 overtime for UWEC (1-0-0 overall).

Following a scoreless first period, senior captain Auggie Moore (Edina, Minn.) gave SJU (1-1-0 overall) a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal, his first of the season and 32nd of his career, 3:15 into the second frame.

The Blugolds were whistled for a penalty following Moore's goal and senior forward Nick Michel (Waconia, Minn.) made it 2-0 with another power-play tally 1:23 later. The goal was his first of the season and 11th as a Johnnie. A pair of junior forwards from Edina, Max Borst and Lewis Crosby, were credited with the assists.

UWEC cut its deficit in half, 2-1, on a power-play goal of its own from Quinn Green with 12:31 remaining and tied it with a rebound tally from Ryan Green 2:23 later.

Michel gave the lead back to SJU on a rebound from senior Henry Enebak's (Lakeville, Minn.) shot on goal with 6:26 remaining, but Ryan Green tied it again at 3-3 during a 4-on-4 with 5:02 left.

Freshman goaltender Jon Howe (Chanhassen, Minn.) made his collegiate debut and stopped his first 25 shots. He finished with 32 saves in the loss.

Both UWEC (6) and SJU (3) received votes in the latest USCHO.com Division III poll released Monday (Oct. 31).

The Johnnies wrap up their trip to Wisconsin with a 3 p.m. puck-drop against Northland (0-2-1 overall) on Saturday, Nov. 5, in Ashland, Wis. The game's radio broadcast will be on WMIN-1010 AM/101.1 FM due to the SJU football game on WBHR-660 AM. – Listen Live
