SJU Golf Shatters Own MIAC Record, Wins 13th Conference Title

HASTINGS, Minn. - Saint John's golf punched its ticket to the 2021 NCAA Division III Championship with a record-setting win at the MIAC Championship on Sunday, May 2, at Emerald Greens G.C. (par 72) in Hastings.

The Johnnies shattered the 54-hole, championship-meet record with a three-day total of 850 (284-281-285) - besting the previous record-low (set by SJU in 2006) by 27 shots - to win the program's 13th MIAC title. All five Johnnies finished in the top 12, with four earning All-MIAC honors (top 10).

SJU will make its 18th appearance at the Division III Championship May 11-14 at Oglebay Resort & Conference Center in Wheeling, W.Va. The NCAA field is scheduled to be announced tomorrow (May 3) on www.ncaa.com.

The Johnnies recorded Sunday's best round, a 3-under par 285, to finish 14 shots ahead of No. 25 St. Thomas (E, 864). Concordia was third (+9, 873) and Gustavus Adolphus finished fourth (+28, 892).

Sophomore Thomas Gutzmer (Jordan, Minn.) became the 12th Johnnie to earn medalist honors at the MIAC Championship by tying with UST's Matt Armstrong with a three-round total of 208 (-8). He collected six birdies to post a 68 (-4), SJU's best individual round of the tournament, Sunday and finish with the program's new MIAC Championship record for a three-round tourney.

Freshman Sam Berger (Waconia, Minn.) cruised to five birdies Sunday, but went +3 on his final four holes to finish with a 1-under par 71. He placed third with a 211 (-5), the school's second-best score ever at the conference meet.

Senior Esten Stensrud (Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area) fired his third consecutive 72 (E) to tie for fifth (E, 216) and freshman Glavine Schugel (New Ulm, Minn.) tied for ninth (+4, 220). Freshman Nate Loxtercamp (Richmond, Minn./Melrose Area) slipped into a tie for 12th (+5, 221) with a 77 (+5) in the final round.
