Johnnies Third After First Day of NCAA Golf Championships

Round 1 Results

WHEELING, W.Va. – No. 12 Saint John's golf is in third place out of 37 teams with an opening-round score of 299 (+15) at the 2021 NCAA Division III Championships on Tuesday, May 11, at Oglebay Resort's Jones Course (par 71).

No. 6 Illinois Wesleyan, the defending Division III champions (2019), leads the field with a 290 (+6) and No. 3 Huntingdon (Ala.) is second with a 289 (+9). SJU holds a one-shot lead over five schools, including No. 9/25 St. Thomas, as nine shots separate third from a tie for 18th.

The Johnnies begin the second round at 12:40 p.m. ET Wednesday, May 12, off No. 1 on the Palmer Course (par 70). The field will be cut to the top 18 teams and top six individuals (not playing on one of those teams) following the day's round.

Freshman Glavine Schugel (New Ulm, Minn.) led the Johnnies with four birdies and finished with a 1-under par 70, thanks to a 3-under performance on his final seven holes. He is currently tied for first place in the 191-man field.

Freshman Sam Berger (Waconia, Minn.) went 2-under on his last five holes to card a 4-over par 75, while senior Esten Stensrud (Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area), sophomore Thomas Gutzmer (Jordan, Minn.) and freshman Nate Loxtercamp (Richmond, Minn./Melrose Area) scored a 77 (+6) each. Gutzmer was 1-under following the first nine holes, but finished 7-over par on the back nine, including 5-over par on his final four holes.
