COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's baseball set a program record for single-season home runs and ran its win streak to 12 games with a doubleheader sweep of Hamline, 11-9 and 14-4 (in seven innings), on Saturday, May 1, at Becker Park.
The Johnnies (24-8, 14-7 MIAC) batted .421 (24-for-57), in which half of the hits were for extra bases (seven doubles and five home runs). The five homers increased SJU's season total to 33, which surpassed the old record of 32 set in 1993, 2000 and 2016.
Hamline (10-18, 5-10 MIAC) erased a 6-0 deficit with eight runs (four earned) in the fifth inning in game one, but SJU answered with two in the bottom half of the fifth and tacked on three more in the sixth to earn the 11-9 victory in the opener. The Johnnies scored 12 runs in the final three innings, including six in the bottom of the seventh, to invoke the 10-run rule in the nightcap.
Sophomore designated hitter
Max Nyrop (Alameda, Calif.) extended his hit streak to 12 games by going 6-for-7 with two doubles, a home run and five runs scored in the doubleheader. He is now batting .467 (21-for-45) with 21 RBI, 14 runs and 12 extra-base hits (seven doubles, one triple and four homers) during the 12-game stretch.
Freshman outfielder
Jack Schleper (Shakopee, Minn.) drove in five Saturday thanks to a home run in each game, while junior outfielder
Soren Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./Blake) moved his hit streak to 11 games.
Game 1
Nyrop gave the home team a quick 1-0 lead with a solo homer, his seventh of the season, with two outs in the bottom of the first and SJU scored five runs (one earned) in the bottom of the second. Sophomore second baseman
Owen Dauk (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) clubbed a three-run homer with two outs to make it 6-0.
The Pipers sent 14 men to the plate and tallied eight runs on nine hits to gain an 8-6 lead in the fifth inning.
Schleper started the comeback with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the fifth, and the next two batters reached via walk. Sophomore shortstop
Matt Hayford (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) laid down a sacrifice bunt and freshman outfielder
Rodney Erickson (St. Paul, Minn./Woodbury) followed with an RBI groundout to tie the game at 8-8.
HU re-gained the lead with a run in the top of the sixth, but the Johnnies tallied three runs in the bottom half. Nyrop and
Soren Roe started the frame with singles, and both scored when the Piper pitcher air-mailed junior catcher
Ethan Roe's (Golden Valley, Minn./Blake) sac-bunt attempt that turned into a single. Ethan came around to score on an RBI single from senior first baseman
Justin Langer (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View) to end the scoring at 11-9.
Sophomore
Hunter Ault (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) allowed one run on one hit in 2.1 innings of relief to pick up his first collegiate victory. Junior
Nathan Brandecker (South St. Paul, Minn.) gave up four runs on six hits in 4.1 innings for the no-decision, while sophomore
Alex Otto (Monticello, Minn.) was tagged for four unearned runs on three hits.
Game 2
SJU totaled 15 hits, including seven doubles and two homers, in game two.
Freshman
Kody Dalen (Carver, Minn./Chanhassen) handled the rest, allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits to improve to 6-0 on the year. He struck out seven and did not issue a walk in seven innings.
Langer hit his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot in the second inning, and Schleper belted his second of the day in the fifth.
Sophomore third baseman
Zach Selchow (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) went 2-for-2 with two doubles and three walks, while Schleper and
Ethan Roe both drove in three.
Langer finished 4-for-6 on the day, while Dauk and Selchow each scored four times.
The two teams wrap up the three-game series with a nine-inning contest at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 2, at CHS Field in St. Paul.
