SJU Travels Sunday to Saint Mary's

Saint John's soccer makes its final road trip of the 2021 spring season for a 4 p.m. game at Saint Mary's on Sunday, April 25, in Winona. – Live Stats | Live Video

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (2-1-1 overall) and Saint Mary's played to a scoreless soccer tie on Wednesday (April 21) at Haws Field. SJU out-shot the Cardinals by a slim 15-14 edge, including a 13-4 advantage after halftime.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jake Swanson (Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson) made four saves in his first collegiate shutout. Shots on goal were even at 4-4.

THE SCORELESS TIE: Wednesday's 0-0 tie was the 34th scoreless draw in program history and the 15th in Collegeville. Prior to Wednesday, the Johnnies' most recent 0-0 score was a memorable one, the MIAC quarterfinal against Macalester on Nov. 5, 2019. SJU advanced to the semifinal with a 4-2 win on penalty kicks.

A LOOK AT THE CARDINALS: Saint Mary's (1-2-1 overall) ends its 2021 spring schedule with a home match against Gustavus Adolphus next Sunday, May 2. Junior midfielder Eli Szymanski is SMU's returning statistical leader, from 2019, in goals (10), points (23) and game-winning goals (3). He and junior forward Wally Barros account for SMU's two goals this spring, while freshman goalkeeper Daniel Sessler has a 1.66 GAA and a .741 save percentage (20 saves).

SERIES HISTORY: SJU is 33-5-4 against SMU since 1981, including a 15-3-1 record in Winona. The Johnnies have won nine of the last 11 meetings overall, and 18 of the last 21. Wednesday's scoreless tie was the series' first draw since Oct. 14, 1989, which was also a 0-0 conclusion in Collegeville. In fact, all four ties between the Johnnies and Cardinals were 0-0 scores.
