Johnnies Continue to Impress, Win Invite

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - Saint John's track and field won seven events en route to a team victory on Good Friday, April 2, in Clemens Stadium.

The Johnnies registered 19 top-three performances and tabulated 219 points, followed by Bethel (140) and Wisconsin-River Falls (112).

Senior Ryan Miller (Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace) won a pair of sprints, the 100- (10.79 seconds) and 200-meter dashes (22.47), and anchored the Johnnies' 4x100-meter relay (Matt Gish, Kevin Arthur, Jack Young, Miller) that took first place with a time of 42.05 seconds. Miller's time in the 100-meter dash is good for fifth in NCAA Division III this season, while the 4x100-meter relay's is fourth. 

Sophomore Tom Nemanich (Red Wing, Minn.) and freshman James Leon (Walnut, Calif./Bishop Amat) crossed the finish line 1 (9:59.13)-2 (10:45.68) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while sophomore Maguire Petersen (Hutchinson, Minn.) won the high jump (2.05 meters) in his SJU outdoor debut. The height is second-best in Division III.

Sophomore Brett Hague (Brainerd, Minn.) placed first in the javelin with a distance of 49.36 meters and senior Kyle McKinney (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Augustine's) followed in second (46.32 meters).

Junior Shawn Schindler (Maple Grove, Minn.) and freshman Joe Charbonneau (New Richmond, Wis.) tied for first place in the pole vault (4.40 meters), though Schindler was awarded first-place honors for clearing the height on his second attempt to Charbonneau's third.

Senior Ryan Murphy (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) and sophomore Gavin Rupp (Villard, Minn./Minnewaska Area) took second (43.32 meters) and third (43.04 meters), respectively, in the discus.

Three sophomores tallied second-place finishes on the afternoon: Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) in the 100-meter dash (10.94), Jaeden Frost (Omro, Wis.) in the shot put (13.94 meters) and Jared Stanke (Anoka, Minn./Elk River) in the 110-meter hurdles (15.45).

Junior Jacob Reding (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan) placed second (52.97) in the 400-meter dash and sophomore Jorge Hernandez (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) took third (53.32).

Sophomore Alexei Hensel (Buffalo, Minn.) claimed third place in the 800 meters (1:56.30) and freshman James Schwinghamer (Ely, Minn.) was third in the 5,000 meters (16:02.08).

The Johnnies plan to compete next Saturday, April 10, though the location/meet has not been finalized.
