Johnnies Compete This Weekend at Elite Indoor Championships

Eleven members of the Saint John's track and field team travel to Waverly, Iowa, for the Division III Elite Indoor Championships, hosted by Wartburg, this Friday and Saturday (March 12-13). – Live Results | Live Video | Heat Sheets

WHO'S GOING: The following 11 Johnnies are visiting Iowa this weekend.

-Sophomore Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park), 47th nationally in the 60-meter dash (7.04)
-Senior Drew Dockendorf (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Holdingford), 10th nationally in the pole vault (4.73 meters)
-Sophomore Jaeden Frost (Omro, Wis.), 25th nationally in the shot put (14.78 meters)
-Sophomore Mitch Grand (Hutchinson, Minn.), 31st nationally in the mile run (4:18.06)
-Sophomore Alexei Hensel (Buffalo, Minn.), 28th nationally in the 800 meters (1:56.62)
-Senior Ryan Miller (Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace), 17th nationally in the 60-meter dash (6.94)
-Sophomore Gavin Rupp (Villard, Minn./Minnewaska Area), 16th nationally in the weight throw (17.28 meters)
-Junior Shawn Schindler (Maple Grove, Minn.), 34th nationally in the pole vault (4.35 meters)
-Sophomore Joe Stauffer (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti), 39th nationally in the pole vault (4.30 meters)
-Junior Michael Wallace (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Anne's), 19th nationally in the triple jump (13.88 meters)
-Sophomore Lloyd Young (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy), 16th nationally in the 5,000 meters (15:06.97)

THE SCHEDULE: This weekend's tentative schedule, as it pertains to SJU's competitors, is listed below.

Friday
-10 a.m.: Weight Throw (Rupp)
-11 a.m.: Pole Vault (Dockendorf, Schindler, Stauffer)
-1 p.m.: Triple Jump (Wallace)
-2 p.m.: Mile Run (Grand)
-4:05 p.m.: 60-Meter Dash Prelims (Arthur, Miller)
-4:35 p.m.: 5,000 Meters (Young)

Saturday
-10 a.m.: Shot Put (Frost)
-12:20 p.m.: 800 Meters (Hensel)
-12:50 p.m.: 60-Meter Dash Finals

THE MEET STRUCTURE: The individual events will be decided with the setup below.

Track
-60-Meter Dash: 2-heat prelim, the heat winners and next 6 fastest times advance to the final.
-800 Meters: 2-heat final.
-Mile Run: 2-heat final.
-5,000 Meters: 1-heat final.

Field
-Pole Vault: "Five alive"/5 vaulters at a time. The first five vaulters jump and when one clears a height or fails to, the next vaulter is brought in to keep the group at five.
-Shot Put/Triple Jump/Weight Throw: 2 flights with 3 preliminary attempts. The top 9, plus ties, advance to the final.

FAMILIAR NAMES: Three of the 11 Johnnies competing this weekend qualified for the 2020 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships: Dockendorf, Miller and Wallace. In 2020, Dockendorf tied for second nationally with an SJU-record (indoor or outdoor) height of 5.03 meters in the pole vault and Wallace tied for 18th (14.39 meters) in the triple jump.

A two-time national entrant outdoors and an All-American (second place) in May 2019 in the 100-meter dash, Miller was poised to make his first NCAA indoor appearance in the 60-meter dash last March. He finished in a tie for 16th nationally in the event with a school-record time of 6.90 seconds. 

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's won its 4-team invitational last Saturday (March 6) in the Donald McNeely Spectrum. The Johnnies won six events and totaled 15 top-three finishes/marks on the afternoon for 167 points, followed by St. Thomas (146), Concordia (89) and Gustavus Adolphus (71).

The Johnnies recorded the 60-meter dash's top three times, led by Miller in 7.03 seconds. Arthur was an eyelash behind in 7.04 and junior Jack Young (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) was third (7.15). Young also posted a season-best time of 22.83 seconds to place second in the 200-meter dash (22.83).

Dockendorf won the pole vault with a season-best height of 4.73 meters and Schindler followed in second (4.35 meters).

The Johnnies did well in the distance-running events, as Lloyd Young and junior Andy Goldsmith (Tulsa, Okla./Cascia Hall) won the 3,000 meters (8:54.92) and 5,000 meters (15:36.87), respectively. Grand crossed the finish line with a season-best time of 4:18.00 to take second in the mile run.

Rupp finished second in the weight throw, first among collegiate competitors, with a toss of 17.28 meters. The mark tied him for 12th in NCAA Division III.

Wallace took first in the triple jump (13.88 meters) and sophomore Alex Crnkovich (Omaha, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine) claimed third (12.71 meters).

Sophomore Maguire Petersen (Hutchinson, Minn.) and junior Sam Rademacher (Marshall, Minn.) finished 2 (1.90 meters)-3 (1.85 meters) in the high jump, while Hensel placed third in the 800 meters (1:56.62).
