Johnnies Start Indoor Season With Triangular Win

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - Saint John's track and field opened its 2021 indoor schedule with a triangular win on Sunday, Feb. 7, at the Donald McNeely Spectrum in Collegeville.

The Johnnies won five events and totaled 18 top-three finishes for 100 points, followed by Division II Southwest Minnesota State (84) and Hamline (55).

SJU claimed the top three times in the mile run, led by sophomore Lloyd Young (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) in 4:26.44, a hair ahead of sophomore Mitch Grand (Hutchinson, Minn.) in 4:26.89. Freshman James Schwinghamer (Ely, Minn.) claimed third (4:36.44).

The Johnnies also claimed the top three spots in the 400-meter dash. Junior Jacob Reding (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan) won the event with a time of 52.63 seconds, followed by freshmen Carson Davis (New Prague, Minn.) and Andrew Wenner (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Prep) in second (53.69) and third (55.05), respectively.

SJU's pole vaulters earned the top four marks Sunday. Senior Drew Dockendorf (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Holdingford) and junior Shawn Schindler (Maple Grove, Minn.) both reached 4.30 meters, but Dockendorf took first because he cleared the bar on his second try to Schindler's third. Freshman Joe Charbonneau (New Richmond, Wis.) finished third (4.15 meters).

Sophomore Alexei Hensel (Buffalo, Minn.) won the 600 meters in 1:24.94 and sophomore Sam Rengo (Esko, Minn.) followed in second (1:28.97). Junior Michael Wallace (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Anne's) was the lone competitor in the triple jump and recorded a top mark of 13.59 meters.

Senior Ryan Miller (Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace) took second in the 60-meter dash (7.15), 0.03 behind the Mustangs' Broderick Starnes (7.12). Sophomore Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) took third (7.24).

Senior Brady Labine (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) took second in the 200-meter dash (23.51), 0.06 behind Starnes, and Arthur placed third (23.59).

Junior Eli Mollet (Jefferson, S.D./Bishop Heelan Catholic) finished second in the weight throw (15.98 meters) and sophomore Gavin Rupp (Villard, Minn./Minnewaska Area) was close behind in third (15.93 meters).

The Johnnies host Augsburg and Gustavus Adolphus for an 11:30 a.m. triangular meet on Saturday, Feb. 13, in Collegeville.
