ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Saint John's hockey played its first game in 15 days and skated to a 4-2 win over Augsburg on Thursday, Feb. 25, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
All four SJU (4-2, 2-0 MIAC) goals were scored by sophomores. Sophomore forward
Auggie Moore (Edina, Minn.) collected three points (1g/2a), including what proved to be the game-winning goal, and sophomore forward
Jack Johnson (Bemidji, Minn.) added a pair of goals in the win.
SJU jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead thanks to two goals in the game's first 2:33. Sophomore forward
Henry Enebak (Lakeville, Minn.) put SJU on the scoreboard with an unassisted, breakaway goal - his third tally of the season - 1:14 into the game. Johnson then made it 2-0 with a power-play goal 1:19 later.
Logan Kons cut the Auggies' (4-1, 1-1 MIAC) deficit in half, 2-1, with a power-play goal 8:37 into the second period. Senior goaltender
Mac Berglove (Elk River, Minn.) made the initial save of an Auggie shot, but the puck squirted to Kons, who had an open net. Berglove made 27 saves to earn his 15th career victory.
The Johnnies out-shot Augsburg 16-11 in the second period and hit the pipe twice, Enebak and junior forward
Russell Harren (Wasilla, Alaska), 1:13 apart halfway through the frame. Senior forward
Tanner Dufault (Kasson, Minn.) clunked the iron early in the third period.
An Augsburg skater lost an edge in his own zone and Moore took advantage of the turnover 28 seconds into the third period.
Grant Reichenbacher made it a one-goal game again with a power-play tally at the 8:52 mark of the third, but Johnson ended the scoring by putting away his own rebound with 4:37 remaining.
SJU out-shot the Auggies, 35-29. Augsburg started the game with only 15 skaters, of which four were defensemen. The undermanned visitors lost one to injury with 5:07 left in the first period and another with 1:38 remaining.
The Johnnies travel to face St. Thomas for a 7:30 p.m. puck-drop tomorrow night (Friday, Feb. 26) in Mendota Heights.
