Johnnie Hockey Hosts Augsburg Thursday, Travels Friday to St. Thomas

Saint John's hockey returns to the ice with a 7 p.m. home game against Augsburg on Thursday, Feb. 25, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. The Johnnies then travel to face St. Thomas for a 7:30 p.m. puck-drop on Friday, Feb. 26, in Mendota Heights.

SCHEDULE UPDATES: The Johnnies announced a number of changes to its remaining six-game, conference schedule.

-SJU's March 12 road game at St. Thomas, which was rescheduled from Feb. 20, has been changed to this Friday, Feb. 26, in Mendota Heights. The March 11 home game vs. Saint Mary's has been moved up two days to March 9.

-The Johnnies' postponed game against Gustavus Adolphus, which was previously set for Feb. 17, has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, March 1, at the HBNHC in St. Cloud.

-SJU's game at Concordia, which was scheduled for March 3 in Moorhead, has been canceled due to COVID-19 testing protocols. 

-The Johnnies added a home game against St. Thomas for 7 p.m. Friday, March 12, at the HBNHC.

The updated schedule is listed below.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (3-2, 1-0 MIAC) dropped a 3-1, non-conference decision to St. Scholastica back on Feb. 10 in St. Cloud. The Johnnies' potent offense, which scored 17 goals over its previous three games, generated a season-high 45 shots on net (40 even-strength) but only mustered one goal in the loss.  

St. Scholastica led 1-0 after the first period, thanks to a power-play goal from Carson Rose at the 12:13 mark, despite a 15-6 shot deficit. 

The Saints added two more goals, 1:40 apart, halfway through the second period before senior forward Tanner Dufault (Kasson, Minn.) put SJU on the scoreboard with his second goal of the season, and 10th of his career, with 5:20 remaining in the frame.

Fresh off a 5-for-5 showing on the power play in the 8-2 conference win Feb. 7 over Bethel, SJU went 0-for-3 against CSS.

Senior goaltender Mac Berglove (Elk River, Minn.) made 26 saves in the loss.

A LOOK AT THE AUGGIES: Augsburg (4-0, 1-0 MIAC) last played on Feb. 6, which was a 4-0 home shutout of Hamline. Senior forward Austin Martinsen collected assists on the Auggies' first three goals against the Pipers and added a power-play goal. He leads the team in points (12), assists (8) and power-play points (5). Junior forward Gavin Holland leads the team in goals (5) and is second in points (8). Senior goaltender Daniil Gerasimov is 2-0 with a 1.00 GAA and a .964 save percentage (54 saves). The Auggies are 7-for-18 (38.9 percent) on the power play and 16-for-18 (88.9 percent) on the penalty kill.

BACK IN JANUARY: SJU started its 2020-21 season with a 6-0 non-conference loss at Augsburg on Jan. 30 in Minneapolis.

The Johnnies controlled the first three-quarters of the first period, boasting a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal, until the Auggies struck for two goals in the final four minutes. Charlie Parker took advantage of an SJU turnover in its own zone and gave the home team a 1-0 lead, on its third shot of the game, with 3:50 left in the opening frame. Austin Martinsen made it 2-0 with a power-play goal nearly two minutes later (18:05), six seconds into the man advantage.

Erik Palmqvist padded the Auggies' lead, seconds after a 3-on-1 rush by the Johnnies failed to produce a shot, 2:36 into the second period. The situation turned worse for SJU when Augsburg was awarded a 5-on-3 power play, thanks to a 2-minute minor penalty and 5-minute major at the same stoppage, 26 seconds later. Grant Reichenbacher used the two-man advantage and extended the Auggies' lead to 4-0 at the 4:47 mark.

SJU had a 5-on-3 power play of its own for 1:50 late in the second period, but did not score.

Martinsen made it a five-goal game 10:45 into the third period and Parker ended the scoring with 4:38 remaining.

The Johnnies posted a slight edge in shots on goal, 32-31, but went 0-for-6 on the power play.

Berglove made 25 saves in the loss, his first since Dec. 15, 2019.

Jack Robbel earned the shutout for Augsburg in his fifth collegiate start. He posted a perfect 4-0 record with a 1.38 GAA and a .924 save percentage (61 saves) last season as a freshman.

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 43-45-2 against Augsburg since the 1984-85 season, including a 0-4-1 record over the last five meetings at the HBNHC. 

A LOOK AT THE TOMMIES: St. Thomas (1-0 overall) returns to action Thursday night (Feb. 25) at Gustavus Adolphus, which is the Tommies' first game since the season-opening, 5-1 victory Jan. 30 over St. Scholastica. 

Senior forward Joey Sofo, a transfer from Division I Alaska-Anchorage, led UST with three points (2g/1a) in the win. Junior Grant Loven, a Division I transfer from Northern Michigan, tallied two points (1g/1a), while a pair of defensemen, senior Phil Fromberger and freshman Vincent Weis, added two assists apiece. UST was 3-for-4 on the power play.

Sophomore goaltender Henry Baribeau and junior Jake Berger, a transfer from Division I MSU-Mankato, split the game in net. Baribeau made the start and stopped all seven shot to earn the win. Berger made 16 saves on 17 shots faced (a .941 save percentage).

LAST SEASON'S MEETINGS: SJU split the regular season series with UST a season ago, but the Tommies picked up the win in the MIAC Playoff semifinals.

The Tommies broke open a scoreless game with three goals and a 20-7 shot advantage in the second period last Feb. 7 (2020) in St. Cloud. John Peterson started the scoring with a deflection in front 5:03 into the frame. 

UST was awarded a power play 1:12 later and Brady Heppner '20 nearly tied it for SJU when his shot went wide on a shorthanded breakaway. The Tommies' Johnny Panvica made it 2-0 seconds later.

The Johnnies had the opportunity to end another UST power play late in the second period, as a Tommie was whistled for a penalty with 34 seconds left in the man advantage, but captain Adam Orn '20 was called for a matching penalty following a scrum after the whistle. Justin Kelley made it 3-0 for UST 13 seconds later.

Spencer Zwiener gave the Tommies a 4-0 lead 1:33 into the third period.

Kyle Wagner '20 ended the shutout with his fifth goal of the season, and 15th of his career, on the power play 4:25 into the third. It was the Johnnies' first shot on goal in 5:34 of power play.

A pair of then-freshmen from Edina connected for the game's final goal with 3:04 remaining. Defenseman Peter Tabor skated behind the net and found forward Auggie Moore in front for an easy one-timer, Moore's sixth goal of the season. 

The Johnnies had a 6-on-4 power play, thanks to the goal pulled, for the game's final 1:43 but only mustered one shot on goal. 

Andrew Lindgren '20 made 42 saves in the loss as UST posted a 46-28 shot advantage. Fourteen of the 46 shots came during a 2-for-5 showing on the power play (7:57 elapsed) for the Tommies, while SJU went 1-for-4 with two shots on goal (7:17 elapsed).

Lindgren made 42 saves for his first shutout of the season and fifth of his career for the Johnnies Feb. 8 in Mendota Heights.

The Johnnies jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a 16-7 shot advantage in the first period. Dufault gave SJU a quick 1-0 lead with his second goal of the season 3:26 into the game.

Wagner found Moore alone in front for a power-play goal, Moore's second tally of the weekend and seventh of the season, with 53 seconds left in the opening frame. The point was the 20th of the season for Wagner.

The Johnnies chased Baribeau from the game when sophomore forward Dan Wieber (St. Joseph, Minn.) made it 3-0 on his fifth goal of the season with 12:44 left in the second period.

Junior forward Russell Harren (Wasilla, Alaska) ended the scoring with his second career goal with 3:05 to play in regulation.

St. Thomas 4, at Saint John's 1 (MIAC Playoff Semifinal) 
SJU ended its 2019-20 season with a 4-1 loss to St. Thomas in the MIAC Playoff semifinals on Feb. 29 in St. Cloud.

Brett Gravelle put St. Thomas on the scoreboard with a power-play goal with 2:59 left in the first period and made it 2-0 halfway through the second.

UST extended its lead with a pair of third-period goals before Wagner erased the shutout for SJU with his sixth goal of the season, during a 4-on-3 power play, with 28 seconds remaining.

Lindgren made 22 saves in the loss. SJU out-shot UST 35-26 but went 1-for-7 on the power play, accumulating nine shots on goal in 9:23 of advantage. SJU hit the pipe, what would have tied the game at 1-1, during a power play early in the second period.

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 6-5-4 in their last 15 matchups with the Tommies dating back to the 2015-16 season, including a 4-1-1 record in Mendota Heights.
