Underclassmen Lead Johnnie T&F to Another Win

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - Saint John's track and field won seven events en route to a triangular victory on Saturday, Feb. 13, in the Donald McNeely Spectrum.

SJU tallied 25 top-three marks/times for a total of 134 points, followed by Gustavus Adolphus (121) and Augsburg (39). Five of SJU's seven individual winners were sophomores and 14 of the 25 top-three placers were underclassmen (two freshmen and 12 sophomores). The home team did not compete in the long jump or 4x400-meter relay.

The Johnnies recorded the top five places in two events, the 3,000 meters and the weight throw. Sophomore Mitch Grand (Hutchinson, Minn.) led the SJU pack in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:06.84. Junior Nathan Meyer (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) and freshman James Leon (Walnut, Calif./Bishop Amat) followed in second (9:25.67) and third (9:29.65), respectively.

In the weight throw, sophomore Gavin Rupp (Villard, Minn./Minnewaska Area) led the way with a personal-best mark of 16.92 meters. Junior Eli Mollet (Jefferson, S.D./Bishop Heelan Catholic) was close behind in second (16.78 meters) and freshman Damian Camperud (Sabin, Minn./Barnesville) claimed third (14.85 meters).

SJU also claimed the top four heights in the pole vault. Senior Drew Dockendorf (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Holdingford) won the event with a mark of 4.40 meters and sophomore Joe Stauffer (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) finished second (4.25 meters) with a personal best. Junior Shawn Schindler (Maple Grove, Minn.) and freshman Joe Charbonneau (New Richmond, Wis.) both reached 4.10 meters.

Three Johnnie high jumpers competed uncontested. Sophomore Maguire Petersen (Hutchinson, Minn.) made his season debut and won the event with a height of 1.85 meters. Junior Sam Rademacher (Marshall, Minn.) and sophomore Jared Meier (Jordan, Minn./Shakopee) both topped out at 1.70 meters.

Senior Ryan Miller (Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace) won the 60-meter dash (6.94) and sophomore Lloyd Young (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) posted the top time in the 5,000 meters (15:06.97).

Junior Michael Wallace (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Anne's) was the top collegiate finisher in the triple jump (13.47 meters), though former teammate Collin Trout '20 won the event with a mark of 14.25 meters. Sophomore Alex Crnkovich (Omaha, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine) followed in third (12.38 meters).

Sophomore Alex Peters (Minneapolis, Minn./Blaine) was the Johnnies' seventh winner on the day in the 200-meter dash (24.00).

Senior Brady Labine (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) finished second in the 400-meter dash (52.06) and sophomore Will Mattock (Maryville, Mo.) placed second in the 800 meters (2:04.01).

Sophomores Jared Stanke (Anoka, Minn./Elk River) and Mason DeGross (New Prague, Minn.) claimed second (9.09) and third (9.35), respectively, in the 60-meter hurdles.

Sophomore Jaeden Frost (Omro, Wis.) took second in the shot put (13.71 meters) and Mollet finished third (13.22 meters).

SJU's 4x200-meter relay (Matt Gish, Hillary Makori, Jack Young, Labine) finished second (1:32.73) and the "B" relay (Seth Cattoor, Charles Haik, Carson Davis, Skylar Keller) was third (1:36.00).

The Johnnies travel to take on Bethel for a 2 p.m. dual next Saturday, Feb. 20, in Arden Hills.
