COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University graduate Lucas Walford '20 is taking his basketball career to Ireland this upcoming season.

He signed with the Drogheda Wolves, which announced the signing Sept. 25 and makes its debut in Ireland's National Basketball Division 1 league this season.

Walford's SJU honors include:

•    2-time All-MIAC second team;
•    3-time MIAC All-Defensive team;
•    2-time Academic All-MIAC;
•    2-time NABC Honors Court;
•    83 dunks as a Johnnie.

In three seasons as a Johnnie, Walford managed to become the program's all-time leader in blocked shots (131) and recorded 26 double-doubles, the program's second-most since 1983-84. The 6-foot-8 post fell 26 points shy of 1,000 for his career, including 104 points in 31 games as a freshman (2016-17) at Division II Augustana University (S.D.).

He was the conference leader in shooting percentage (.653), rebounding (8.8 rpg.) and offensive rebounds (57) in 20 MIAC games in 2019-20.

SJU (27-2, 19-1 MIAC) tied the program record for single-season wins (1978-79), won its ninth MIAC regular-season title and seventh MIAC Playoff championship, and made its third consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in 2019-20.

The Johnnies advanced to the third round (Sweet 16) of the NCAA Tournament, where they were scheduled to host No. 4 St. Thomas (March 14), but the season abruptly ended with the NCAA's cancellation of all winter and spring championships due to the COVID-19 pandemic. SJU ended the season ranked No. 2 nationally in the final D3hoops.com Top 25 poll and have a record of 73-11 over the last three seasons.
