Gruber Reaches 100-Hit Milestone in Johnnies' Sweep of Finlandia

FT. MYERS, Fla. – No. 25 Saint John's baseball returned to its winning ways with a sweep of Finlandia (Mich.), 6-2 and 18-0, on Wednesday, March 4, in Ft. Myers, Fla.

The Johnnies (4-1 overall) scored the doubleheader's 24 runs thanks to 22 hits and 12 free passes (seven walks and five hit batsmen) against the Lions (0-6 overall).

Senior shortstop Michael Gruber (Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska) became the 32nd to reach 100 career hits with a stand-up, RBI triple in his second at-bat of the first inning in game two.

Gruber and sophomore outfielder Soren Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./Blake) collected two hits and drove in two runs apiece in game one. Gruber scored three runs, while senior outfielder Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn./International Falls) tallied two hits and two runs scored of his own.

Freshman pitcher Brock Brumley (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) struck out seven and allowed one run on three hits, in six innings of work, for his first collegiate win. 

SJU batted around and scored nine runs en route to game two's blowout victory. Senior third baseman Jack Schramel (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) cleared the bases with a double and sophomore second baseman Pete Schroeder (Minneapolis, Minn./Providence Academy) recorded a three-run, inside-the-park homer. Schroeder finished 3-for-4 for four RBI and three runs scored.

Freshman Matt Herold (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) picked up his first collegiate win after striking out seven in three scoreless innings of relief. Senior Taylor Fourre (Albany, Minn.) started the game and allowed one hit in two innings.

Freshman Alex Otto (Silver Creek, Minn./Monticello) struck out all three batters in his inning of relief and junior Luke Zweber (New Prague, Minn.) struck out two in his frame.

The Johnnies play a doubleheader against Rivier (N.H.) at 9 a.m. ET Thursday, March 5, in Florida.
