No. 25 SJU Mashes Its Way to Two More Wins, 8-3 and 17-5

FT. MYERS, Fla. – No. 25 Saint John's baseball earned another sweep, 8-3 and 17-5, against Rivier (N.H.) on Thursday, March 5, in Ft. Myers, Fla.

The Johnnies (6-1 overall) collected 29 hits, including 10 for extra bases, in the doubleheader.

Senior shortstop Michael Gruber (Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area) continued his hot start by going 7-for-7 with three doubles and seven RBI in the two wins. He is now batting .708 (17-for-24) with eight runs scored, six doubles, a triple and 14 RBI from the No. 2 spot in the lineup over the season's first seven games.

Senior outfielder Aaron Kloeppner (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) was also perfect at the plate Thursday, 6-for-6, with five runs scored and three stolen bases.

Rivier (2-7 overall) scored three runs in the doubleheader's first inning off freshman lefty Casey Trapp (Blaine, Minn./Centennial). The Johnnies came back to tie the game with three runs in the fourth inning and broke the game open with five runs in the fifth, including a three-run double off the bat of Gruber.

Trapp overcame the first inning by allowing only one hit over his next three innings. Senior southpaw Mason Miller (Big Lake, Minn.) earned the win, allowing one hit with five strikeouts in the final three innings.

SJU scored seven runs in game two's first three innings and plated nine in the sixth inning, including a pair of two-run homers from freshmen Zach Selchow (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) and Max Nyrop (Alameda, Calif.).

Freshman Alex Otto (Silver Creek, Minn./Monticello) struck out four and allowed one run on four hits in three innings, while freshman Braden Higgins (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) gave up four runs in three innings for the win. Junior Trey Cavello (Eden Prairie, Minn./Holy Family Catholic) pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

Senior outfielder Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn./International Falls) went 4-for-5 with five runs scored in the two games to tie former teammate Max Jackson '19 for the school record of 132.

The Johnnies complete their spring-break trip with a 9 a.m. ET game against Alvernia (Pa.) on Friday, March 6.
