GENEVA, Ohio – Saint John's University's 4x100-meter relay won the national championship and sophomore Ryan Miller (Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace) finished second in the 100-meter dash at the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, May 25, at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

SJU tied for 11th overall out of 80 teams in the final standings with 18 points.

SJU's 4x100-meter relay team – sophomore Nick Gannon (St. Paul, Minn./Hill-Murray), senior Drew Schoenbauer (New Prague, Minn.), sophomore Brady Labine (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) and Miller – won the national title with a time of 40.92 seconds. The Johnnies were in fifth place at the final exchange before Miller bolted to second and passed John Carroll's Hayden Snow in the final 15 meters to win the race by 0.05 (see below).

The Johnnies won the second heat in 40.94 seconds Thursday in the prelim, which was the second-fastest time behind John Carroll (40.85), and broke the school record with a time of 40.78 seconds May 16 in La Crosse, Wis. The foursome tied the school record it set a week prior of 41.32 seconds to finish 12th out of 16 teams in the prelims at last year's NCAA Championships.

The All-America honor (top eight) is SJU's first in a relay. The Johnnies' 4x400-meter relay (Mike Frericks '81, Chris Longbella '81, Tom Frericks '82, Chuck Moorse '81) finished seventh at the 1981 NCAA Outdoor Championships, but All-America honors were awarded to the top six prior to 1985.

Miller returned to the starting block 90 minutes later and broke his own school record to finish second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.22 seconds. The All-America honor is the first by a Johnnie in the event.

A slow start slipped Miller into eighth place, but he shifted up quickly and nearly edged Davonta Womack of Bridgewater (Va.) at the finish line, missing the national title by 0.02 seconds (see below).

Miller has owned SJU's last three records in the 100-meter dash: 10.22 (now), 10.39 (May 11 at the MIAC Championships) and 10.57 (2018). He won Friday's first preliminary heat in 10.46 seconds, the second-fastest out of 20 sprinters. Miller finished 10th (10.93) out of 20 sprinters and missed the final by 0.01 seconds at last year's NCAA Championships.

The 4x100-meter relay is SJU's sixth national title in an event at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships:

-1983: Brian Smith '83 (5,000 meters)
-1985: Jim Gathje '86 (steeplechase)
-1986: Jim Gathje '86 (steeplechase)
-1999: Darwin Dumonceaux '99 (shot put)
-2016: Ryan Bugler '17 (steeplechase)
-2019: Nick Gannon '21, Drew Schoenbauer '19, Brady Labine '21, Ryan Miller '21 (4x100-meter relay)
