All-Region Release | All-America Scholar Release

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Three Saint John's University golf student-athletes earned Golf Coaches' Association of America (GCAA) awards May 14 in Nicholasville, Ky.

Juniors David Schneider (Albany, Minn.) and Matt Wahl (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) were named GCAA All-Central Region, while Schneider and senior Jack Koehler (Eden Prairie, Minn.) earned GCAA All-America Scholar honors.

SJU has had 49 All-Region honorees in the last 20 seasons (since 2000) and an All-America Scholar each of the last 20 years, for a total of 32 during that span.

To be eligible for All-America Scholar, student-athletes must be either a junior or senior with a season scoring average under 79.0, a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher and have participated in 50 percent or more of the team's events during the season.

SJU tied for 21st at the NCAA Championship May 14-15 at Keene Trace G.C. in Nicholasville, Ky. The Johnnies recorded a two-round total of 623 (+19) and missed the cut (top-18 teams) by three shots.

The GCAA All-America Scholar and GCAA All-Region honors are the first for Schneider, who is a biology major with a 3.55 GPA. Although SJU missed the cut as a team at the NCAA Championship, Schneider qualified as an individual for the final two rounds. Schneider finished 21st out of 216 golfers with a four-round total of 297 (+9). He ended the season second on the team with a 74.6 average in 29 rounds.

Wahl led the team with a 74.4 average in 26 rounds this season and tied for second with four rounds at par or better, including an opening-round 66 (-6) at SJU's Spring Invitational in late April. Unfortunately, Wahl fell ill at the NCAA Championship and missed the opening round. He averaged a 71.1 over his final seven rounds prior to the national tournament.

A two-time GCAA All-America Scholar, Koehler graduated May 12 with a 3.45 GPA in economics. He led SJU with six rounds at par or better and finished third with a 75.7 average in 27 rounds this season. Earlier this month, the conference coaches selected Koehler as an All-MIAC honoree for the second consecutive season.
