MIAC Release
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - Four Saint John's University baseball student-athletes earned 2019 All-MIAC honors on Tuesday, May 14.
Senior pitchers
Jake Dickmeyer (Woodbury, Minn.) and
Danny Kuhn (Alexandria, Minn.), senior center fielder
Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) and junior designated hitter
Joey Stock (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Prep) received All-MIAC distinction.
SJU has now had 40 All-MIAC honorees this decade (10 seasons).
Junior right fielder
Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn./International Falls) was named to the nine-man MIAC All-Defensive team for the second consecutive season and senior catcher
Mike Reilly (La Canada, Calif./St. Francis) was named to the MIAC All-Sportsmanship team.
Dickmeyer became the seventh Johnnie since 1978, and second pitcher, to earn All-MIAC honors three times. The last to accomplish the feat was outfielder Jed Riegelman '04 (2002-04). The 2018 MIAC Pitcher of the Year went 3-2 with a 2.50 ERA, 22 strikeouts in a team-high 36 conference innings. He registered a 1-2 record despite a 1.23 ERA and a .238 opponent batting average in his first three MIAC starts, all complete games, as SJU scored only two runs in the combined 22 innings of play (2-1 loss to Saint Mary's, 1-0 win over Concordia-Moorhead and 2-0 loss to Gustavus Adolphus).
Overall, Dickmeyer is 7-2 with a 1.75 ERA, .215 opponent batting average and 53 strikeouts (to 10 walks) in 72 innings pitched so far this season. The workhorse has totaled seven complete games, including three shutouts, this spring. He became SJU's all-time leader in innings pitched (220.1) and the second Johnnie to record 20 pitching wins.
The All-MIAC honor is the second consecutive for Kuhn, who totaled a 3-1 record, 1.89 ERA, .240 opponent batting average and a team-best 23 strikeouts in 33.1 MIAC innings this spring. The 1.89 ERA was good for fourth in the conference. He is 6-2 with a 3.07 ERA and 42 strikeouts (to 11 walks) in 55.2 innings pitched. Kuhn has pitched two complete games and shared a pair of shutouts.
Like Kuhn, the All-MIAC distinction is also the second straight for Jackson. He ended the conference schedule second on the team in batting average (.319), hits (23), RBI (13) and stolen bases (6). Jackson batted .471 (8-for-17) with runners in scoring position and .438 (7-for-16) with two outs in league play. Overall, Jackson leads the team in stolen bases (23) and is second in hits (55). Jackson became SJU's all-time leader in hits (206), games played (169), at-bats (619), runs scored (132), RBI (109), stolen bases (51) and outfield putouts (380) this spring. The 206 hits are currently 12th in MIAC history. Jackson has started 168 consecutive games and is two stolen bases from the SJU single-season record of 25 set by Ryan Lieser '07 in 2006.
Stock led the MIAC in slugging percentage (.950) and home runs (9), finished second in RBI (26), third in batting average (.417) and seventh in both hits (25) and runs (15) despite playing in only 18 of the 20 league games. The nine homers were one away from the conference record in MIAC play. The slugging percentage was second-best by a Johnnie in conference play, while the RBI and total bases (57) were third. Overall, Stock leads the team in batting average (.366), slugging percentage (.741), on-base percentage (.471), extra-base hits (17) and RBI (38). He broke SJU's 19-year-old, single-season record for home runs (held by Brent Schloe '00) with 12 home runs this spring and has been intentionally walked seven times, including five in the MIAC Tournament alone. Stock's overall numbers were largely fueled by a 13-game stretch in which he batted .512 (22-for-43) with a 1.876 OPS, 10 home runs and 28 RBI.
The MIAC All-Defensive team distinction is the second consecutive for Ulrich, who committed one error in 50 chances and recorded four outfield assists in 20 conference games in 2019. He currently leads the team overall in hits (56) and runs scored (38), and is second in batting average (.348) and stolen bases (18). Ulrich batted .600 (12-for-20) with four extra-base hits and eight runs scored from the leadoff spot last weekend in five MIAC Tournament games.
A career .294 hitter, Reilly has appeared in six games for SJU this spring. He was a member of SJU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee the last two academic years and will volunteer with Saint John's Abbey's Benedictine Volunteer Corps (BVC) in Totoro, Uganda.
Saint John's (32-12 overall) travels to Illinois for a four-team NCAA regional hosted by top-ranked Concordia Chicago this Friday-Sunday, May 17-19. The Johnnies begin the double-elimination tournament as the third seed against second-seeded Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 17, at Cougar Field in River Forest, Ill.
