Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's baseball earned its 10th consecutive trip to the MIAC Tournament with a doubleheader split with Macalester on Wednesday, May 1, in Collegeville.

The Johnnies (27-10, 12-6 MIAC) won game one, 5-2, but surrendered a 3-2 lead and dropped game two, 5-3. The loss was SJU's sixth by two runs or less this season and just its fifth to Macalester (17-18, 8-10 MIAC) at home since 1993.

SJU batted .232 (13-for-56) on the day, including .250 (3-for-12) with runners in scoring position and .222 (4-for-18) with two outs, but clubbed three home runs.

Junior designated hitter Joey Stock (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Prep) extended his hit streak to 10 games in the split and blasted his 10th home run of the season in game two. The three-run shot in the sixth inning gave SJU the 3-2 lead. Stock is now one homer away from SJU's single-season record of 11 set by Brent Schloe '00 in 2000.

Saint John's 5, Macalester 2
Junior third baseman Jack Schramel (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) gave SJU an early 1-0 lead on his second home run of the season with two outs in the first inning. The Johnnies tacked on two unearned runs to make it 3-0 in the second inning, but the Scots started the fourth with four straight hits off senior Jake Dickmeyer (Woodbury, Minn.) to cut the lead to 3-2.

Senior second baseman Thomas Meland (Northfield, Minn.) added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run homer, his second of the season and sixth of his career, in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Dickmeyer picked up the win, improving to 6-2 on the year. He allowed the two runs on 10 hits in six innings and is now second in school history in both wins (19-5 record) and innings pitched (211.1).

Senior Alex Budde (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to earn his fourth save of the season.

Macalester 5, Saint John's 3
Michael Moreno gave Mac a 1-0 lead with a first-pitch, leadoff home run to start the second inning and the Scots scratched together three straight two-out hits in the fourth to make it 2-0.

Stock's aforementioned three-run blast gave SJU life and the lead in the sixth inning, but the Scots answered with a pair of two-out runs to take the lead (4-3) in the bottom of the eighth. Sam Goldberg ripped a 2-0 pitch down the right-field line for a two-run double, his fourth hit of the game, but was thrown out at third base to end the inning.

The Johnnies had runners on second and third with one out in the bottom half of the eighth inning but did not score.

Michael Helton made it a two-run game with his first collegiate home run in the top of the ninth.

Senior Danny Kuhn (Alexandria, Minn.) allowed two runs on seven hits in seven innings. Senior Tommy Auger (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) took the loss, allowing the final three runs on three hits in two innings of work.

The Scots' Andrew Polk, who entered the doubleheader with a 9.77 ERA in 15.2 innings pitched this spring, collected the win thanks to three innings of hitless relief.

The Johnnies play host to Hamline for Senior Day and the regular-season finale at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at Becker Park.

The MIAC Tournament field is complete, though the regular-season champion and seeding are not set: Gustavus (22-10, 13-5 MIAC); SJU (27-10, 12-6 MIAC); St. Olaf (23-12, 12-6 MIAC); and Saint Mary's (20-16, 12-8 MIAC). The Gusties host St. Olaf Saturday, while the Cardinals' conference schedule is complete.
