Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – No. 30 Saint John's baseball suffered a pair of losses, 5-0 and 5-3, to Carleton on Saturday, April 6, in Collegeville.

The Johnnies (18-7, 3-3 MIAC) batted only .175 on the day, down .135 from their season average of .310, which included .107 (3-for-28) with runners on base and .133 (2-for-15) with runners in scoring position.

Five of the 10 runs allowed were unearned, due to five errors in the field.

The sweep was the first for Carleton at SJU since 2009 (5-1, 5-3).

Carleton 5, Saint John's 0
The Knights (5-9, 2-2 MIAC) opened the scoring in game one with four runs, three unearned, off senior Danny Kuhn (Alexandria, Minn.) in the third inning, and added another in the fourth.

Wilson Battle silenced SJU's bats, allowing only three hits in the seven-inning, complete-game shutout. One of the three hits was a one-out single from senior left fielder Jack Wingerd (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall), the 99th of his career, in the bottom of the seventh inning. Battle struck out four and did not issue a free pass in what was his second start of the season.

Kuhn allowed the five runs (two earned) on seven hits for his first loss of the season (4-1 record) and second of his career (11-2). He struck out six and walked a career-high three.

Carleton 5, Saint John's 3
Junior third baseman Jack Schramel (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) served as the catalyst for single runs in the first and sixth innings as SJU grabbed a 2-0 lead in game two. He doubled with two outs in the bottom of the first inning and scored on an RBI single from junior designated hitter Hunter Lindquist (Spring Lake Park, Minn./Totino-Grace) in the next at-bat. Schramel singled to start the Johnnies' half of the sixth inning and scored from first on an RBI double from junior first baseman Aaron Kloeppner (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park).

Carleton gained a 3-2 lead with three runs with two outs in the top of the eighth inning.

Wingerd walked with two outs in the bottom half of the eighth, stole second and moved on to third on a throwing error from the Knights' catcher. Junior second baseman Taylor Fourre (Albany, Minn.) tied drove a 2-2 pitch back up the middle for an RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.

SJU's lead was short-lived, however, as the Knights scored two unearned runs with two outs in the top of the ninth.

Junior Joey Stock (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Prep) pitched six scoreless innings, allowing five hits with three strikeouts, in the no-decision. Senior Tommy Auger (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) took the loss, allowing the two unearned runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of relief.

The Johnnies host St. Scholastica (9-8, 2-0 UMAC) for a 1 p.m. non-conference game on Sunday, April 7, at Becker Park.
