FT. MYERS, Fla. – Saint John's baseball picked up another sweep, 8-0 and 9-2, against Bluffton (Ohio) on Tuesday, March 5, in Ft. Myers, Fla.
Three pitchers combined for a four-hit shutout in game one and the Johnnies (4-0 overall) scored nine unanswered runs, including five in the bottom of the sixth inning, in game two to complete the sweep.
Overall, the Johnnies' pitching staff struck out 29 and gave up eight hits in 14 innings of play.
Senior
Danny Kuhn (Alexandria, Minn.) scattered three hits and struck out 11 in five innings of work to earn the win in game one. Sophomore
Nick Penick (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) and freshman
Nathan Brandecker (South St. Paul, Minn.) each pitched a scoreless inning of relief to complete the shutout.
Junior shortstop
Michael Gruber (Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area) went 2-for-3 with four RBI from the No. 9 spot in the lineup to pace SJU in the opener.
The Beavers (2-4 overall) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two, but SJU took advantage of two errors and scored four runs in the bottom of the second. The Johnnies broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Junior
Joey Stock (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Prep) picked up the win in game two, allowing the two runs on four hits. He struck out eight in four innings on the hill. Brandecker pitched two more innings of scoreless relief and senior
Bennett Wiggins (St. Anthony, Minn.) made his first appearance of the season, a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
The Johnnies play a pair of 9-inning games against different opponents on Wednesday, March 6. SJU takes on Thiel (Pa.) at noon ET, followed by a 3 p.m. ET start against Otterbein (Ohio) in Ft. Myers, Fla.
